Art Techniques with Matisse Derivan - Wood Graining

A step by step guide to creating a great woodgrain effect using Matisse Derivan products.

the sort of painted finishes the main
ingredient we use is the faux finish and
marbling gel and pain the modeling chill

we're using a background color of straw
and really what we're doing is putting a
glaze over the top and either taking it
off or putting it on in a different
fashion and that will dictate what

just mixing the marbling gel and wrong
number together i'll apply this in a
fairly haphazard manner over the top of
the dry cut of straw as this coat is dry
we use the wood graining rocker which is
an extremely effective tool so using the
wood graining rocker we're just rocking
the surface the face that mates the
paint backwards and forwards
ever-so-slightly which changes the
pattern that's presented to the paint
while the paint's still wet you can go
back over the top and by and large redo
areas other tools that you will have
seen such as the cones and the set of
metal comes can be used to imitate
various different types of wood when I
did the wood graining before I went into
one direction if we're rag rolling
dragging you use a lint free cloth and
just take the paint off presenting a
clean face of the cloth to the painted
surface right rolling as a technique
where we literally
scratch the rag up give it a little
twist and go over the top so we get a
pat new forming you're only limited by
your imagination
there's a cliche for you as to what can
be used to actually take the paint off
still will give a Finnish known as
dragging which is normally used using a
flogger which is a very long head or
long bristle brush and any of these
finishes can be used as backgrounds for
paintings as well so in summary the
marbling gel or faux finish marbling gel
mixed with the paint and as a glaze can
then be applied over a different color
and this will slow the drying time of
the paint and also allow you to
manipulate it for quite some time
