Silicon Valley Start up Creates Portable Air Cleaner

Air pollution around the world has been a growing problem. That is why one Silicon Valley startup is looking to give everyone quality air wherever they go.

Wherever Ray Wu goes, a breath of fresh air follows. He's using the device Wynd, which includes a removable sensor.

He checks the air quality around him, and then starts purifying.

"It'll clean the air around your personal space. So anywhere between three feet around the device, it just purifies the air around it. The sensor monitors that air and actually controls the purifier so it can automatically clean as it goes," said Wu, co-founder of Wynd.

The headquarters for Wu's company, which like so many iconic Silicon Valley companies, takes shape in a garage.

But the idea came about when the Beijing-born Wu and his co-founder, Jason, traveled to China.

In Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, Jason said pollution caused his daughter's severe cough and swollen face.

"We realized that what Wynd can do for us can help a lot of other people as well. It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, but when you are living in a place like Beijing, or some of these other major cities, even if you do have the economic means, you still have to breathe the air. So we hope to really make an impact there as well," said Wu.

Wynd, which has air flow capabilities designed by a former NASA engineer, cleared the smoke around it in seconds.

Wu said through an app, Wynd has an even bigger plan of collecting all the air quality data its users capture in order to build an air quality network.

"And what we hope that people can use that information for is to look, for example, which restaurants have the healthiest air, which restaurants have the healthiest environments," said Wu.

If customers start choosing places with high air quality, it could motivate a restaurant to improve its literal atmosphere, because it pays to do so.
