Raspberry Pi Camera Motion Detection

Demonstration of a small motion detection script I wrote for the picamera. This video was recorded before any optimizations were done to the script. Each image is captured at 64x36 then compared to the previous image pixel for pixel based on their RGB value. As I come up with ways to make the script better I will push the changes to GitHub.

what is up you guys clean here today and
i'm going to be showing you guys a
script that I wrote for my brand-new
raspberry pi
I just got this thing in the day before
yesterday actually might have been
yesterday I can't really remember but I
got the full kit has a case a Wi-Fi
dango and a official camera actually
about the camera separately but this kid
that I have I will link in the
description so you guys can check it out
if you're interested in getting one of
your own
definitely recommend it if you're
interested in doing anything like this
if you ever look at the arduino but do
you think it might be a little too much
for you maybe this is a better place to
start for you in the end you can control
an arduino from the raspberry pi so if
you want to use this as a master that is
a possibility but anyways the script
that i'm gonna be showing off today is a
motion detection script
so basically what it's doing is using
the camera to take pictures and it's
comparing the pictures to each other to
see if there's been any kind of movement
or any changes and then how it's doing
this is a perfect so basis so it will
look through all the pixels on the image
and i am using a low res image but it
still takes a while because it is a
raspberry pi is a little suit little
almost a little supercomputer it's a
little computer so it's not exactly a
supercomputer it it has limitations on
its speed
so we'll go ahead and give a
demonstration here i'm going to back up
a little bit and try to not move so I
can show you what it does when it's not
detecting anything and then i will also
move around so you can see actually
initiate recording
ok so i'm about to launch the command
here and Buddy see the light turns on
hopefully I'm not moving at all oh my
hands shaking cause I'm nervous
I don't want to go off five percent
changed
ok this script only triggers the
recording had twenty percent changed so
as long as I can maintain less than
twenty percent will be fine
has took the form up towards the screen
so you can actually see the output right
now and move my hand really really
slowly and hopefully get it in frame
that was twelve percent change just
removed
hand ten percent ok starting to go back
down because i'm starting to move less
again I now a two percent so that's
that's what it does whenever it's not
recording
I mean whatever it's not detecting
enough movement to set it off
so I'm actually going to move my hand in
front of the camera now so we can see
that change and it should initiate
recording because I should probably come
out to about thirty-five percent of the
pixels being changed so there you go
the motion detection is recording now
and this video will show up in the
browser so I'm waving at the camera
uh there is converting it into a mp4 and
it should now be available in a brother
so i'm going to stop the script
I see the light turned off on the
Raspberry Pi and we're gonna come over
here to the browser
yeah sorry i'm recording the the screen
on my phone but uh he should be able to
see kind of okay

well here's this video you can see me

yeah you can probably tell that it's a
little grainy
the reason is so great news because i
have this will cover on the raspberry pi
camera still
oh that's really out of focus focus
all right there you go that will lip
that blue lip right there that comes off
and remove that little plastic thing
which is causing all the graininess of
the camera this camera does 1920 x 1080
it's 30 FPS and it does 1280 x 720 @
60fps which which is really good it's
only like a twenty-dollar module
so you guys are interested in this you

I should be updating it a couple times
that I have some ideas for some
optimizations to make it a little faster
maybe maybe this could turn into
something maybe couldn't
