hey there everybody its markcrilley i'm
back with another how to draw video
you know I've done a lot of videos over
the years but i have never done a video
about how to draw a can't girl
so that's what we're going to be doing
today I'm going to start by setting up a
kind of a grid pattern here
I'll do that all in time lapse but then
I'll come back and do the guidelines
step by step alright so we've got
basically some crisscrossing lines here
the main thing to focus on is that we
have two rectangular shapes here fairly
wide rectangular shapes and those are
going to help us place the various parts
of this pose
I'm going to begin by drawing the torso
it's a female character and they can't
like pose
so we're going to put in her torso now
we're looking at this from the side and
this is her torso what kind of the line
of her back and note just around this
point is where the line is going to come
back up crossing just a little closer to
this line then to the bottom line to
make her the bottom part of her abdomen
kind of curving around into her thigh
and this line right here can be a
perfect guideline this vertical line
here for placing this one leg and the
other line behind it
- to create that sort of vertical Phi
that we have as part of the pose and i'm
going to go ahead and use this line here
to give us some sense of where the other
line of the torso goes and she's got one
arm that's coming down like this
she like I said I'm sort of looking at
this from the side sort of imagining her
any can't like pose and so her elbow
more or less
a lot of lies right upon this horizontal
line here and that can be another
guideline that helps you get this into
place
notice and this is something that I've
sort of noticed over the years the the
width of the upper arm versus the
narrowness of the forearm coming down to
the rest if you're examining that with
right there and the narrowness hear that
something that you can observe that
helps you get that right in the pose
after pose drawing after drawing
so this is one hand she like she sort of
crawling across the floor and let's go
ahead and do the head the head is more
or less centered on this vertical line
here maybe just a touch
further over here to the left
that is to say a little more of the head
is going to occupy this space over here
to the left of that line and once we've
got that in place we can go ahead and do
another arm over here
I want to kind of move things along here
these videos can become quite lengthy
and i know some people are like oh I
don't mind if you do a long video but
then other people think you know they
don't have all day to watch me and draw
a picture over a long period of time so
if you feel those of you feel I'm going
too fast just go ahead and hit that
pause button to follow along on some of
these things
I'm having this leg over here in a
slightly different position so as to
give a feeling of depth here and one
thing that you can kind of focus on
if you look at this distance from here
to here and kind of roughly measure that
over to here and an equal distance
that's going to be where the foot the
heel is going to come in
so let's go ahead and put a line here
the calves curving over here until it
reaches very close to that line I was
just telling you about
and then have that come down here to
form
the foot like I said the this cat girl
is kind of crawling across the floor and
so the the foot ends up pressed into
this position here the sort of pose
where you get one very long very
slightly undulating horizontal line
there and don't forget because you've
got the second leg back there that
you're going to have a heel a second
he'll of that foot as a curve C sort of
imagine that being there and you find
that it's going to come back here like
that
all right well I think I've got the
basics of the the body in place and i'm
going to zoom in now so that we can do
the details of the head and the cat ears
which is going to be probably the most
fun part of the video so let's get to it
ok so let's begin by drawing the eyes
and you can kind of use these little
lines here as a partial guideline but
you might want to add an extra line here
for where the the center of the head is
going to be and maybe just a couple of
quick guide lines here and to show
yourself where the eyes are going to
fall
so this one larger I closer toward us
you've seen this in a bunch of my videos
before this is up and kind considerably
larger and the the lines of the top and
the bottom of the I can kind of trail
off or come off just a little bit to the
left
but you don't see those lines over here
on the right-hand side and then this
I over here ends up a little more
compressed asst and she's turned away
from us
I don't know I i feel like i may be
repeating myself sometimes for it
because I've done these things in
previous videos but when we get to the
ears
that will certainly be something new
that no one's ever seen before in one of
these videos
let's go ahead and put the eyebrows
getting the distance between the upper
eyelashes and the eyebrows can be kind
of tricky and there's this
I find this sort of perfect place where
you can
get a graceful distance in there so she
doesn't look too surprised i mean if
their way up here looks very surprised
if they're down low it looks too intense
maybe and i'm going to go ahead and drop
in the nose and just a little bit of a
smile
I'm gonna sort of adjust to the shin
here I feel like maybe that line needs
to move there
i am going to very quickly indicate some
bangs here for her hairstyle so that we
can move on to doing the the ears which
i think it's going to be kind of fun
so I'm just start dancing this in here
as always you have to remember with
manga hairstyles that the the top of the
hair the line at the top of the head
tends to float above the skull you know
suggesting this full-bodied haircut
I think in my early years of drawing
manga I wouldn't get that quite right
and so I pay extra attention to that now
and I'll just throwing a little strand
of hair here have that one to come down
like that maybe a little more in the
back and now we're ready to start doing
the ears now I've noticed your idea
about a cat at like year is maybe that
it's going to be right up at the top of
the head
I've seen that some manga artists really
tend to put them way down here at the
sides of the head and if you like that
style on you know study some of those
artists and see how they do that I'm
going for something that's a little
between those two extremes so I'm trying
to do this
the upper part of the cat ear it's going
to be more darkly shaded in it curves up
here almost go horn at this point and
then you get a much larger area back
here
that creates our first cat ear and I've
noticed some artists will put just a
little like 22 little Tufts at the tip
there
that suggests a certain farinas to that
ear or to the the tip of the year anyway
and rather than just leave this blank
most artists will indicate some sort of
them or just drop in some lines here
they kind of finish that off give it a
little more depth maybe now this other
year that's on the other side of the
head is going to be sort of like that we
said with the I it gets a little bit
compressed it's not going to be the
mirror image of that other I i would
start with this top part and then when i
drop in the the lower section
like I said it's a considerably more
compressed it's taking up much less
space from left to right there we go
we've got to pretty much everything we
need to suggest this can't girls ears of
course later on we're going to have to
draw the tail which will finish off that
effective for being part girl part can't
let's go ahead and pull back and we'll
do the clothes and that suggestion of
the tale that I was talking about
all right so I'm gonna go ahead and add
the suggestion of a sort of a sort of
imagine this is almost a leotard or
something that ballerina might wear this
the top that she's wearing and as it
comes down here you know that instead of
it being such a sharp point it's maybe a
little more curved in real life
I'm going to draw a line here that is
the bottom edge of that top that she's
wearing
and one thing that can make this seem a
little more realistic is to add a bit of
a seam across the edge here and get a
bunch of wrinkles that sort of fan out
from that lower back section
this will make this all look a little
more real more realistic slightly more
realistic anyway
i'm going to make the bottoms of her
cuffs at the end of the shirt sort of go
well past the wrists and fold across the
top of the tops of her hands i see this
dungeon and not just can't girls but all
kinds of manga illustration sort of an
attractive way of drawing the the lower
end of the cuff and then over here as
always i would like to draw the female
characters wearing skirts of course you
end up with this odd situation of where
does the tail go
so I'm going to kind of compromise a
little and the skirt will be coming up
just enough to account for that tail
who knows everyone has to I guess come
up with their own way of imagining the
the clothing of the cat girl
what they would wear and how they
clothing would have to adjust to the
reality of having a tail but as i get
down here i'm going to go ahead and
curve this line first down a little and
then gradually up until it comes more or
less about us
tall as her head you know and at the tip
of the tail you're going to see a lot of
you know freeness there
you don't have to i mean everyone comes
up with the wrong ways of doing these
things but I sort of think it looks a
little more attractive if we get just a
little more indication of further at the
tip and then as it curves back down
it's very wide at the tip the way I do
it and then as a cum curves back down it
gets an increasingly narrower until it
comes back down towards the body
i am going to draw just a suggestion of
socks you like she's got some sort of
warm thick socks on and pretty much I
feel like I've got everything where I
needed to be now to keep this video a
reasonable length of them do the rest of
this in time lapse but i'm going to try
to sort of zoom in and give you a good
close look at as i can add the final
line working it's been quite a long time
since i mentioned the pencils that i use
i have one right here the prismacolor pc
935 it's a black colored pencil people
are always asking me what is that pencil
i wish i had one of those pencils
I don't think it's like a magic pencil
it doesn't you know do amazing things
all on its own but it's a good permanent
pencil that you can almost think your
lines with them and when you go in to
erase those black lines will stick
around okay well let's go ahead and get
to that process and i'll come back to do
some final remarks
yeah

first ever how to draw a cat girl video
