on my brother Tom 15 I remember all
those years ago when this businessman
came to visit us here at the Crystal
Cathedral and burst out in song and a
brew
the beautiful boys and we all melted we
still do
we love you thank you for coming back
it's such a pleasure to have you back
his own expense wonderful years in the
military in the Marine Corps
when I have an opportunity to speak with
a veteran
especially one whose succeeded in
becoming a seal
it's extremely special there's a new
book out called see love God
incredible book it is by young man you
heard from just a few moments ago
reading the scripture
please welcome a seal
an author an incredible individual Chad
Williams
as a marine always have to ask this why
did you want to become a seal
because Navy SEALs are the best
war there had to be something the voters
think you want to do that because i know
im
problem love to but a marine yeah I just
well I are always understood you know
growing out that you know
Navy SEALs they go to the most difficult
military training there is in the world
so decide I want to go for that what was
it like
going through SEAL training I remember
they got us together the instructors and
they had they had all this look at each
other they say look
left look right there's a 173 a bus they
said
take mental picture the person that is
standing next to you his chances are if
you make it to graduation
those people that you just took a mental
picture up they haven't made it through
and so are those 173 guys only thirteen
investment straight through to
graduation
a member when the most difficult part is
still training is called hell week
it's five and a half days are running
with a bow on top of your head
you're soaking wet your there's never
dry moment shivering cold in the winter
time
and you get four hours a sleep that's
not four hours of sleep per night
at a grand total of four hours a sleep
for the five and a half days
really motivated you I met a man by the
name is Scott Houston was a US Navy SEAL
and US no ordinary Navy SEAL if there
ever were such a thing
he was the youngest man to ever make it
through SEAL training at seventeen years
or was in the Navy SEAL
he also is a world champion can
absolutely
so you for the triathlon before three
events he's got world champ status
the pentathlon he also has the fastest
time on the seal commands obstacle
course 0
there's no navy seal in the world that
could be this Navy SEAL
at the obstacle course which leads just
into one more allowed on
he's also the only man to ever beat the
beast on a program called man first
piece they train a chimpanzee
to go through an obstacle courses
superhuman speed
but they didn't realize our fitness gym
up against Scott have instant so he
a chimpanzee through an obstacle course
the only one to do it
how to do I would be that's you
them in many cases when you're we're
doing something like this
and then wants trainings over and
sometimes even during training
no sudden maybe you forget who you are
in some respects meaning you try the
booze in traffic other things and Nick
maybe lose track and in your case that
ever happened if if so
what carried you out that in fact I
wasn't really a follower of Christ
when I went in to show training I
believe in God's existence I knew that
you know Jesus was important and
certainly that's what I try to try the
drinking
I tried giving in sort of like it for
Indian let's eat drink be merry
nose for for tomorrow we may die and I
saw that just leads
nowhere ended up getting invited to
event where this man by the name of
great laurie was going to be speaking
and he's talking about a soldier in the
Bible
so that got my attention in this order
was naming name in was
respected revered man even the King
enjoy his presence
so he's this person yes a certain
persona on the outside
one in reality on the inside not even
the lowest
a slave work from an on/off Syria would
treat skin with him because
yes leprosy and so naming hears about
this profit by the name of Elisha that
could potentially feel him that his
leprosy nobody had ever done it during a
men's time
so he goes he sees the profit net profit
doesn't even have given my face to face
just speaks through the door through a
servant to him
s is good if your cell from there Jordan
River seven times about the seventh time
will come up
your skin will be that of a newborn baby
if you can imagine a min
various you brought the people that have
five hundred thousand dollars to pay
this profit to heal him won't even give
my face to face
he turned around is just didn't have the
humility
his pride is like I'm not gonna go do
that I've better rivers run from
about one of his men said look name and
if the profit told you to do some great
thing would you not have done it
I mean we can imagine if he told a min
you gotta for all on your
arms on your elbows on your knees 100
miles through
lassie probably would have done it but
because it's so simple so foolish
he didn't want to do it but he winds up
doing he takes the word
is man he goes out there in after faith
and trust in God gives himself in that
seventh time he comes up
and he had that new skin like that have
a baby and so great begins to relate
this to
our condition as human beings I related
with name and Here I am on the Navy SEAL
all my friends
they got great respect for me they they
put me up on a pedestal
went they don't realize that more
miserable now than I've ever been but I
don't wanna let him know this
and regulates this too the leprosy name
and how it was like arson
and it's tearing us apart it leads
ultimately to death the second death
and so we have to do is have the
humility that name and ultimately had
by turning from arson and putting our
trust in Jesus Christ we don't have to
earn our way into have been and it
sounds almost forced how simple it is
just like it was for name and that's why
says the preaching of the cross
is foolishness to those who are
perishing is the free gift card we
receive it
by turning for mercy and putting our
trust in him to march 14th 2007
that's what I did became a born-again
believer
for the fights for young people that
right now maybe
not sure if they would like to accept
Jesus Christ
see what vice or I would tell them the
you know think deeply about where you're
going to spend eternity a lot of times
we think I've
our own death sort have been the third
person but we have to realize
this person that I am my are my flesh
this will cease to exist as it is
and I'm gonna go on somewhere so the
person has to look within
measure themselves up to God's law have
ever lighter stoner use his name in vain
it stacks up you know God would see many
investors liars and thieves
last summer service name but that good
news is this
he's provided a way out and I like to
relate it in terms of being a soldier
a lot of people they don't really have
an understanding what's the cross all
about what really happened there
I put it this way I my two friends 1
Mike months or another US Navy SEAL when
he was overseas in
Ramadi Iraq he is providing some cover
for some of the troops that were down on
the ground
if you can imagine is up in a high place
like this occur make it stronger up on
the roof it hits them right in the chest
falls to the ground into the dark
and he had the exit just one step away
tornadoes not even his problem
but the other guys on the roof with him
that instant a chance to make it past
Saturday
to the exit so he yells to them grenade
to let him know
and he lunges downforce the grenade and
takes the
last attacker nato for impact shrapnel
and everything
absorbs on his body like a sponge and he
ultimately
dies but because of what he did our
friends on the roof live
so I tell folks especially in people
greater love has no one than this
the one that lays down his life for his
friends
you could see that a man like Mike
months or but now I want you to consider
the man who spoke those words have
greater love
it was Jesus Christ and he said that at
a time just before he went to the cross
so it all comes together now you see
justice mike wants work jumped on that
hand grenade took the blast so that
grenade upon himself so our friends
could live
remember that grenade was not his
problem but made his own problem
Jesus Christ his problem was not saying
but he took our chances for he made him
knew no sin to become sin for us that we
might become the righteousness of God in
him
he absorbs the impact the consequences
of arson upon himself
so that we can live with him eternity
Jesus Christ he was killed
he was hung from the cross at Calvary so
that we could have freedom from San
you see the soldiers and now look to the
cross that's what it's all about the
plan of God
takes away since the world well
thank you very much thank you very
your service to this great country a
virus and its
it sexy it for me it's extremely special

Daniel Rodrigues thanks again brother he
did a great job
some people might
ass why we do this in a church
why do we have so many flags in seeing
so many patriotic songs
why do we talk so much about our country
and I want to respond to you that
question with picture
look at this
keep it up criminal look at this pic
really look at it
this man
is holding his baby for the first time
just returning from a tour his wife was
pregnant when he left him when he came
home
his child was born and look at his face
its pain its healing
its sadness its celebration
small the baby s first time ever being
held by his or her father
what do you suppose this man
was thinking when he was shot at when
bombs went off and fire rained down
when he was standing on the other side
the world in a sand pit this is what you
wanted
more than anything yes right here
the reason we do all this
is because it was story and a memory
his story his memory
his suffering and his joy is hours also
but you know beginning with this man's
story is just the perfect thing for my
message because today I want to talk
about
memories story and what it means to be
in living reminder God's call
upon our life as Christians is to remind
people love him
is to remind people love God
and his love and I'm explain what that
means the phrase was first published by
Henry now and in the idea is that
everything that you do
builds a memory and those memories
become your story
and there what holds you together this
is of course
started originally in the Bible you the
Bible is all
about remembering all about memory in
Jesus day there was this
place in the capital S an area of ten
cities in which
the children were trained to memorize
tore up
the Jewish people loved Torre the first
five books of the Bible to them
is the core of who they are and they
taught their children both boys and
girls to memorize a Genesis Exodus
Leviticus numbers Deuteronomy
because they said if we ever forget the
torah
the greatest treasure that was given to
us if we ever forget how God
brought us out a V chip to hell God gave
us his instruction
and what God did for us in the
wilderness the gift to the promised land
if one generation ever forgets
we will not exist ever again and so the
centrality have them was
up there their life was and and religion
was too
memorize and to note or other that there
was never
ever forget the story of their people
you see
their their instruction God's law didn't
come
just on tablets it came in five scrolls
came shrouded in a story so they
understand
why they shouldn't have idols because
because of all the things that happen to
to their forefathers when they may
titles you see the story
buttresses and supports their values the
the memory the story is what makes
their value or their law have have any
power at all
and the Jews didn't stop there whenever
there was a great battle or something
and
and God would have some some great
victory for them they would take a big
pile of stones and find the biggest one
that a smaller one in the senate on top
and then you have this
is big pile of stones go up it was
called in have been easier
event has our means stone have help
and the ideas that every time a traveler
or somebody came by and saw this mound
stones that there would be a memory
there something that would never be
forgotten
that this very place God came here and
got helped us will never forget that
because they knew that memory and story
was was the thing that held them
together at their identity either the
self together
jesus did this a lot as well
you know Jesus the uncreated essence up
the father in the flesh right Jesus was
also a man
and he had this this incredible thing
about him in the way that he would touch
people's lives around him
he did it my favorite way he did it with
food
yes he did jesus said in healing
ministry
Jesus actually in in his day to eat with
someone
at a table would be like calling them
your equal
and so you have a thing where you have a
party in
and some people with eat together they
were in the same class and the Kingswood
elevated and the slaves would come to
come in later after everything was done
but
different groups in the hierarchy would
never eat together
especially centers centers were never
allowed to eat with righteous people
and just went around eating with these
people he would take
you take a prostitute and he would sit
down with her and ask her how ur day is
going to pour a glass of wine have some
food
take a tax collector and and he would
take it see if
you take a wealthy man in a senator and
a poor man and a leper
and you would sit with these people and
he would give with them with joy and
talk to them about their day what are
your story
and his disciples would say rabbi
don't you know who that woman use rabbi
and he would say yes come and join us
seen eating ministry me everywhere he
went people would
deeply touched because he invited them
to his table
now he did this to the three years of
his ministry an open
the end the night he was betrayed
anybody who is a Christian knows the
story
he said what eat this bread and drink
this cup
in remembrance a vmi
for sure those were some balls across
Jesus giving his life
but him giving his life on the cross was
deeply connected to the meal
the fact that the people he 8 with the
ones that important wine with any bread
with
that those people were important to him
she treasured them and he showed it to
my
in with them and so he told his
disciples
keep getting together like this
so that you may know that I am here and
remember that I gave my life for you
because I love you and I i value when I
treasure you
and so after the death and resurrection
of Jesus the church continue to do this
it was the most important thing to
church could do was the Eucharist
and you would have senator who have
never even touched a slave
a Christian would sit down any would
serve a slave
and put his hand on the shoulder and
kiss him and say rather
this is the body of Christ broken for
you the blood of Christ shit for you
and that slave would put his hand on the
shoulder at the senator
would say brother this is the body of
Christ broken for you
the blood of Christ said for you and
what they were doing was reminded each
other what Jesus was like
the meal itself was a reminder their
worries living the story
every Sunday in every time we take the
Eucharist to every time we take
communion towards me whatever you call
it
every time we do that we are remembering
what Jesus was like
recalls all sorts of people from all
different walks of life
to eat together as brothers and sisters
this is because memory and story is the
thing that's not hold our souls and our
lives together
memory binds us a memory heals us memory
makes this whole
memory is the set of course all in our
lives the story is what makes it real
I i kno with my wife you know what are
the times I feel
most close to her is when we sit around
and talk about
all stories and things that have
happened us will sit around with cuppa
coffee
and will laugh and and we'll get some
about certain things remember people our
lives our trips we took
I remember also friend my best friend in
the whole world we were roommates in
college
we first met fifteen years ago you know
we did the craziest silliest things
and much years later me a couple years
ago you know
we have to talk to each other he's a dad
now I'm adaptable very serious
professional people you know we've got
kids and
and we drive it ok regular cars we don't
have to hitch a ride everywhere and
you know gentlemen you know and so
things happen in life when you get busy
and and and we can never talk to each
other in a while one
kinda felt distant and so we said hey
let's go to our favorite deli in just
get together
all we did after not seeing each other
for months and feeling far far away from
each other
we just began this tell stories about
being total idiots in college
you know we would sit around and tell
the stories about being I mean really
sophomoric stupid things that we would
do i mean
we used to have honor men's floor we
used to have this
it was like a circle we played this
invented this game called floor Goff
it's exactly as it sounds we would
actually you hear the word four
and the doors to the whole come to close
there's no book
of you know I i'm this we used to
steel a those little trays from the
cafeteria you know
on a snowy day and we dose sledding down
the hill
and so here is my friend and I have been
kinda distant for a while sharing these
idiotic sophomore stupid stories and you
can see as
last thing I mean in the mail people but
must've thought we were crazy laughing
about the
and I feel so close to him you know it
got so close to me why
because our memories and our stories
even when they're ridiculous are the
things that bind us and
draws closer to one another and it's
those stories that really
make us who we are we are meant to be
living
memories we are meant to be living
reminders
and were meant to remind people love
Jesus
were meant to remind people love our
values were meant to remind people of
our story because our story gives wisdom
and guidance inside and it blesses
others have you ever met somebody that
reminded you of Jesus
I have five min a few of them there
something wonderful about these people
they could talk to you about the angel
game yesterday and somehow you feel like
you're talking to Jesus
there are some people that have such
Dept in their eyes you can see into
their soul essence
warmth to their spirit that you can't
help but be drawn into their presence
and
and wanna be around them all the time
there are some people
if you just spend time with them he will
be a different person
this is the kinda person God wants you
to be
he wants you to be a living reminder and
the main way that you can change lives
affect lives bless lives around you is
to remind people
your story if yes even the bad ones
your values and so on and so forth
now memories and story
%uh when they're polled out of a society
make the society fractured
and broke im in the same way that if you
a person who forgets most important
memories becomes a fractured and broken
percent and the place that this fracture
and break
takes a happens the most in our society
is yes between generations
one generation to the next one
generation wants to pass on its morals
and its values but doesn't wanna pass on
its story and doesn't want to bless
one generation was to create its own
story in doesn't want to hear the older
generation it doesn't want their values
it doesn't want their morals
and then you have generations of people
were fractured
disconnected from each other and they
love to mock
and make fun love one another that's not
at all God's
planned for his people and his kingdom
God's plan is he's shown us through the
Bible is to be people who remember
impasse our values
and our memories on to one another and
the best way to do that if you haven't
heard it
is through your story
i wanna talk to do two groups of people
the for someone to talk to is the older
generation
and the second group i wanna talk to you
is the younger generation
first the older generation you want to
pass on your morals
you want to pass on your values before
you can do that
you must pass on your story your
memories
and you must bless I counsel people
so often who have a father
or a mother who wants them to be a
certain way
all they want to do is rebel against
that the reason yes
they don't understand that their parents
have those values
because of their experience
they also don't realize that though that
their parents or the older people are
alive for the teachers
probably love them but they don't know
that because their parents or the older
people alive
have never said it to them you must
become a person
who is willing pupil if you are an older
generation
to pass on your story to a younger
generation you pass on your store you
don't have to even tell your values its
inherent in the story
and you'll find a young man a young
woman looking at you want to learn and
wanting to take more if it comes like a
great story
and then
and then when you pass on that story you
must less
less that person really blessed I think
the greatest one of the greatest source
a fractured broke
this in our society is the lack of an
older generation
blessing the younger over so different
all they look so different an act so
different feel said
less than you know how
Hadley young person wants to hear
from your lips I'm proud to view
I love you I bless you
those words
or Sol powerful to the young
people in your life young people want
mentors
young people want to learn they want to
hear your story but they don't feel
blessed by you
to see a child I bless you and I love
you
words have true power and change
never remove them from your lips less
people freely
and give your memory in your story and
if you do that then your values
then your morals will pass because there
will be a context
for it I'll never forget sitting with my
grandpa personally
a great mentor my wife I'm
he was sitting in a chair an older man
traveled the world
and his chair spontaneously here's a
Spanish teacher starts benchley any said
I never went to Spain
and just staring off into the sky and
the detergent
I never went to Spain now
he is the most mellow gentle relaxed guy
and so everybody was like
who a repeal it together like what act
so I saved a bunch of money and I sold
some stuff I don't need I took my
grandpa to Spain
and it was great as while we were there
in Spain we got to cease great things
you know Barcelona and we got to see
Madrid
and too late oh and cool buildings and
cathedrals you know their members not
only those places
you know I remember the most my grampa
stories she got punched
through a window in a bar fight I didn't
know that
it's amazing it looks like a cowboy
movie I mean that
the things I heard %uh I mean the way
you
and how we met my grandma and and how we
became
a Christian and and his experiences in
the war and as a teacher and
every day we were sitting around over
meals he was blessed me and he did
he shared stories and then you put his
hand on you he said Bobby
me call I love you
I'm so proud of you if you had said that
I would be the man I am today
same with my gramma Grampa sure my
grandma person the I
him the person I have because at the
store the generations before me have
given me
because the blessings of those those
people my shoulder my head without that
in order without the blessing I wouldn't
be here
a totally different guy we need the
blessing
read the story and give us your values
and to the younger people to
you're not the most important thing in
the world
you know
okay some clap photograph of
no I I mean the old
the message you get through the most
common mediums today is that the younger
you are the prettier you are and the
more youthful you are the more important
you are and every year I get older I
recognize how dumb I was
you know I I know I'm 30 today which is
relatively young and some were in the
lower middle but I know that
ten years from now they're gonna be
things I said when I was 30 that was
just stupid
the only way to really gain some clarity
on that is to create some space for
mentors my wife
if you're young person you need mentors
you need to be a
so the older generation blesses the
younger by keeping memories and by
blessing them
the younger generation blesses the older
generation by asking
and honoring asking honoring you must go
to mentors find them
ask and the big questions that you have
life create space for them
I could differ my grandpa we went to
Spain if I am done that he would never
had the space for me
and I honored him said thank you grandpa
and I'm honoring him now even in the
sermon on a story
that is so important that you honor the
generation before them
so that they know that their value
a friends you cannot be America if we
don't have a story
we can be whole people a whole nation a
whole society
if we forget who we are by our memories
and buyer experiences
and if one generation goes to the next
in our values and our morals are lost
everybody's lost and the way we passed
that on the way we change the world the
way we live in a different places by
story
and by memory share it be it be a living
reminder
let's pray father we come to you in the
name of Jesus
and we thank you lord for all that
you've given us
and we ask father in this place that we
would know your story
more than anyone's I pray that the story
of Scripture
the story in our lives how you've
touched us
the lies before and after us or that
that story would continue
and that the memories will heal us give
us strength
and bind us together and your tits in
Jesus name we pray
I meant
it
world
here
may the Lord bless you
in keep you the Lord causes face to
shine upon you and be gracious to you
me the Lord lift his countenance upon
you and give you peace
in the name of the father and if the Sun
the Holy Spirit
