Let’s download and install Freemake Video
Converter. Open a web browser like “Internet
Explorer”. In the “Address bar” enter
“freemake.com”, and press enter. On the
“Freemake” home page, click the “Downloads”
button. On the “Downloads” page, click
the download link for the “Freemake Video
Converter”. On the “Download Information
Bar”, click the “Run” button. This will
download the file, and then automatically
start the installer. On the “Select Setup
Language” window, click the “OK” button.
On the “Welcome to the Freemake Video Converter
Setup Wizard” screen, click the “Next”
button. On the “Select Components” screen,
leave “Full Installation” selected, and
click the “Next” button. There is about
an 18 MB download and then a quick installation.
Click the “Finish” button to complete
the installation and start the program. If
you close the program you can open it again
by clicking the “Freemake Video Converter”
icon on the desktop, or by clicking the Windows
“Start” button, “All Programs”, “Freemake”,
and then selecting the “Freemake Video Converter”
link. Let’s add a video file to Freemake
Video Converter so we have something to work
with. You can add video files in one of two
ways. You can click the “DVD” button if
you have a DVD as the video source. You then
select the location of the DVD by selecting
the drive under “Computer”. If your video
file is already in a file on your computer
you would click the “Video” button. Let’s
click the “Video” button. I will browse
for and select the source file. For the source
file I am using “Steal This File Part 1”.
This is freely distributed, and is not a pirated
download. We could just convert the video
but there is some basic editing functionality
built into Freemake Video Converter I want
to go over quickly. Click the “Edit” button.
A new video player window will open with the
selected video in it. You an use the controls
on the left to play and pause the video, and
the slider to change the position in the video.
If you want to remove parts of the video you
can use the “Cutting” menu. Let’s say
I wanted to remove the beginning of this video
so that it would skip the intro. I’ll move
the slider all the way to the left to the
beginning of the video and then click
the “Start Selection” button. I’ll then
move forward until I see the beginning of
the 20th Century Fox logo, and then click
the “Selection End” button. Now if I move
the time slider out of the way we can see
the blue line marking the section of the video
that is selected. To remove this we’ll click
the “Cut Selection” button. Now if I move
the time slider back to the beginning we can
see that it now starts on the 20th Century
Fox logo. To confirm the editing, click the
“OK” button. The source video file is
a .Mov file which is a Quicktime file format.
The output file can be in a number of formats

disc, assuming you have a disc burner. It
also supports converting and uploading to
Youtube through your account. Another cool
feature is the ability to convert video directly
from the Internet. Let’s say you have a
YouTube video that you wanted to have a copy
of. First you need to open the web page with
the video you want to copy. I’ll use one
of my other YouTube videos. We need to copy
the URL for the video. We’ll right-click
on the address, and select “Copy”. This
puts the URL in the Windows clipboard. Click
the “Paste URL” button. We now can see
the link for the video and the video thumbnail
and length listed below. I’ll remove this
from the list now. Now let’s convert our
“Steal This Film” quicktime video to a
new format. Let’s convert to an “AVI”.
We’ll click the “to AVI” button. The
“AVI output parameters” window will open.
You can click the drop-down under “Preset”
and you will get a list of various built in
settings. They are made up of different resolutions,
video codec’s, audio codec’s, frame rates,
and bitrates. If you want you can click the
“Add your preset” button to create your
own custom preset where you can customize
the settings that work best for you. We’ll
leave the “Preset” set to “Same as source”.
By default it will save the file to the same
location as the source with the same name.
You can change this if you want. By default
it is set to “One-pass encoding (high speed)”.
One-pass encoding encodes the file on the
fly and at a constant bitrate. You can change
this to “Two-pass encoding (low speed)”.
Multi-pass encoding like this analyzes the
file on the first pass, and then adjusts the
bitrate lower where it can and higher where
its needed. This will make for a better quality
final product, but will take twice as long.
I’ll leave “One-pass” selected, and
click the “Convert” button. The conversion
window will show information like the percentage
complete and how long it’s been running.
Once the conversion is complete click the
“OK” button, then click the “Close”
button. The
last thing I want to cover is using Freemake
Video Converter to merge or join multiple
video files together. We’ll click the “Video”
button again.Hold CTRL and click each file
to be added. Click the “Open” button.
These are in the correct order, if they were
not you can click and drag them. Let’s preview
the files. To combine these files together
into one file, look at the “Join Files”
option. It currently shows “OFF”. Click
it once. It now shows “ON” as well as
a new video file that contains the three original
files. We can now export the file as we did
before. Now if we preview the resulting file
we have a single file that contains our three
source files. You should now have a good understanding
