Shell Scripting Tutorial-6: Rename & Delete Files & Directories

In this tutorial you'll learn to rename files using 'mv' command and you'll also learn to delete files and directories using 'rm' and 'rmdir'

hello guys my name is mother and welcome
to my channel
this is the sixth tutorial in the series
of tutorials on unix shell programming
in this tutorial will be checking out
the MV command which is used to rename
files and directories and will also be
learning how to remove or delete diet
Ruiz through the terminal using the RM
come on now what I'm going to do is I'm
going to first create a file using touch
touch is something that we learned about
tutorials ago
don't really remember a recorded a few
days ago so anyway we type in touch and
then give a space character and then
type in a name for our file
let's call this one
anything let's call it a forest
underscored gump right and i can
actually see in my home folder that my
father has been created
it's an empty text part and that's what
does for you now if suppose I want to
rename this file from Forest underscored
come too

anything that said if I want to be in it
rename it to the green month then i'll
be using the mb come on
and we will give a space type in the
name of my file that i want to be made
three name which is a forest underscore
come and then give another space
character and then type in the new name
for my 5 which would be the underscore
green underscore mine and if i type and
enter here then I'll see in my home
folder I no longer have my file forrest
gump because it has been renamed to the
Green Man
that is what Emily does for you it works
the same for my crease
if I have a dark tree are called new and
if i want to change it to all then you
know I'll simply have to type in RM
space new space old and press ENTER and
my diet will be renamed the next thing
that we're going to check out is how to
remove files of our crease using the RM
command
not if suppose I want to remove my file
the green month the command to use RM r
type in RM give a space and then type in
the name of my fire which is the
underscore green underscore mind if i
press Enter key
I see that my file is no longer there
right so it has been deleted
now what I'm going to do is I'm going to
first create a diet pre using mkdir and
i'll call it new
press ENTER and I see in my home folder
that I am I dietary right here now
I try to remove the start for using RM
RM space knew that's how it should be
because uh you know that's how we did it
for the file so you know let's try to
repeat it for a blackberry but we get an
error message system
it says that autumn cannot remove new
because it is a dietary but then RM is
capable of removing diet trees
you just have to provide an option so
that it knows that what it's trying to
remove the dietary and
you know it's it's it's sort of like
commanding a command to just obey the
orders and you know not think about the
consequences so we have to type in RM
and then
- r is the option and i just typed in RM
first give a space and then type in -
are and another space in this time if i
type in my night rename and press enter
I don't get any error message and i can
see in my home folder
sorry that my new folder is not there
now another thing that you can do if you
do not want to use our with the - our
option to remove dark trees is that we
first create one
mkdir test if I have been enter i see
that i have a test folder in my home
folder if I want to delete it without
using our mi can use a command called
rmdir it's a substitute for arm - are
and if I taipei now the name of my
dietary which in this case is test
that's what I want to remove the press
Enter I can see that in my home folder
test no longer exists
