How to convert Digital Audio to Analogue

How to convert Digital Audio to Analogue

How do you connect a digital audio signal to an analogue amplifier, hifi or PA system?

There are many Source devices now on the market which only feature a digital audio out - making it difficult to connect to a conventional analogue amplifier or audio system.

A Digital to Analogue Converter (or DAC) will allow for the digital audio from digital media devices (such as Apple TV, XBox One and Sky Box HD Multiscreen) to be converted to an analogue audio signal and outputted via dual phonos or mic jack.

This device also provides the solution if you wish to use an analogue hifi system as the sound reinforcement for your TV (which now often feature low quality internal loudspeakers). Digital media devices can still be connected to your hifi system using a DAC converter.

As more and more AV and entertainment devices
feature a digital audio output only, HowToAV
takes a look at connecting your digital audio
source to an analogue audio system...
Today we're looking at audio signals and specifically
at the 'DAC' or 'Digital to Analogue Converter'.
There is now an increasing number of consumer
and professional AV source devices appearing
on the market featuring a digital audio output
only - i.e. products which don't feature a
conventional analogue audio output such as
3.5mm jack or stereo phono connectors.
These digital media devices - particularly
consumer devices such as the Apple TV, the XBox One
and the SkyBox HD Multiscreen - are limited
to Digital Optical or Digital Coax audio outputs
and, therefore, cannot be directly connected
to a conventional analogue audio system
such as a hifi or sound reinforcement system.
And this can cause integration difficulties both
for residential and commercial AV systems...
In home AV, the sound quality of modern televisions
continues to downgrade as smaller and smaller
loudspeakers are squeezed into flatter, thinner TVs.
But a simple solution for improved sound quality
is to output the sound from your Apple TV or your games console using your standard home hifi system.
And this is where the 'DAC' or digital to analogue converter comes into play...
As many home hifis and amplifiers don't feature
a digital audio input, a DAC device such as
this will input the digital audio signal from
your source device and convert it to analogue
- usually via dual phonos - which can then
be connected to your conventional analogue
audio system.
Similarly, if you're integrating an Apple TV or Sky
Multiscreen device, for example, into a commercial
AV system - perhaps using display screens
which have an audio facility - the digital
audio signal from your source can be converted
using a DAC for inputting into a standard
analogue sound reinforcement system.
So, whether its great sound reproduction you
want from the movies and music streamed to
your Apple TV, or immersing yourself
(and all your family and friends!) in the soundtrack
of Assassin's Creed...
a D-A-C is a simple solution to integrate
your digital and analogue AV devices.
