Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Farm Frenzy 2 for PlayStation 3, developed by Melesta and published by Alawar Entertainment.
Farm Frenzy 2 is a surprisingly good farm management game, mostly because of its level-by-level structure and hectic nature. Panda bears don't hurt, though.
This video review features gameplay footage of Farm Frenzy 2 for PlayStation 3 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Tristan.

Farm Frenzy is a series I had never heard
of, at least until I received the second installment
free of charge through PlayStation Plus quite
a while ago. With a little research, I discovered
that the game was most popular on browser
and mobile. And now, all that Farm Frenzy
action you loved on those platforms, on your
PSP orPS3!
Farm Frenzy 2 is a Mini, a notoriously underappreciated
game format available on PSP and PS3, mostly
because the games are, wellports of browser
and mobile games. Sure, those games can be
fun, but are they worth the higher price point
for big screen access? In short, no. But as
an objectively judged game separate of its
format, Farm Frenzy 2 provided a lot more
fun than I was expecting to get from a game
called Farm Frenzy 2. Its not a social,
persistent farm management game like Farmville,
but instead a farm management game played
on a level-by-level, challenge-by-challenge
basis. And there are a lot of farm animals.
Farm Frenzy 2 seems to focus more on the livestock
aspect of farming, rather than crops of vegetation.
Levels will give a goal, and provide a set
amount of resources to get to that goal. Sometimes,
you receive a ton of cash and a certain amount
of products to produce, and other times youll
be strapped for cash with a ton of chickens
running around and have to accrue a certain
amount of the ambiguous coin currency. Buildings
need to be purchased, eggs need to be transferred
into flour, then into what appear to be pancakes,
and overall, the game seems to focus on a
chain of refinements that lead to the desired
product. And if you want a gold score, it
all needs to be completed under the set minimum
time. Technically, you can take all the time
you want on a level, but if you really care
about getting that gold rating, Farm Frenzy
2 can actually provide some replay value for
those more challenging levels.
But, really, the reason why Farm Frenzy 2
truly surprised me with its fun lies in its
hectic nature. I dont profess to play a
lot of farm management games, but of the few
Ive played, a casual, plodding wait was
present at multiple times in the gameplay.
Yeah, youll have to wait sometimes in Farm
Frenzy 2, but the gameplay gets pretty frantic,
especially in later levels. There are many
factors that contribute to this feeling, like
the limited storage space and linked ability
to sell products at the market, the need to
provide grass for the animals, and the damn
bears. Why are there panda bears in rural
America anyways!?!
The bear mechanic (if you can call it that)
actually provides an important function; primarily,
to frustrate you with its livestock-scaring
antics, but also to allow a chance to sell
the bears at
market for some much-needed cash. It also
serves to illustrate Farm Frenzy 2s hectic
nature, which actually separates it from other,
more serious farm management games.
It also means that the game is aptly named.
But as surprised as I am to say it, I would
say Farm Frenzy 2 is a good arcade-y farm
management game. Because panda bears.
