How To Create Your Own Screen Captured Video Tutorials with Free Opensource Software!

My goal here is to point you to all the tools you need and provide a basic tutorial on how to create your own quality screen captured video tutorials all without spending a dime on software by using freely available open source source screen capture software along with YouTube's own online video editor.

hi there Sam Khan like here in fusion
studios but i would take some time today
to make a quick video tutorial on how to
do a quick video tutorials or at least
videocasts this will be all open source
and free software available on the web
to do it on so first thing we need is a
screen capture app so let's go ahead
grab camstudio that's camstudio dot org
links there on the blog post and this is
an open source project screen capture
software project to allow you to grab
your screen as video just like you see
here and i would suggest grabbing the to
point out release and not the beta yet
so go and grab that download it install
it
next thing would be to grab a
third-party codec camstudio comes with
one but it's not compatible with most
editing apps or youtube you'll have
errors if you try to upload it directly
so you need something else to go in
between so i would recommend ffdshow
which is that ffdshow
- try outs or sorry try out dot
sourceforge.net on the links also
they're over on the blog then download
that install it
you've already done it so we'll just
move forward once you've got those two
things ready to go you want to go ahead
over YouTube create an account you will
need that also another reason to create
an account is that allow you to use
their online editor as part of your
account
so once you get your videos uploaded
there you can go in
splice them together however you want to
do it quicker clips put in some
transitions some very basic effects
basically brightness on and you'll be
good to go
so
ok so we will go ahead pop open a dance
studio
actually i'm recording with right now so
in record mode you can see there are
some statistics and whatnot
we're going to shoot for 1280 x 720
which is 720p high-def which i think is
a good middle of the road format for
YouTube
most people are watching 1080i youtube
and certainly for screen recording that
that's going to slow things down degrade
your frames per second but you don't
want to do if you can help it
so what you get camstudio open
you want to go ahead and set up your
video options and it's basically where
we're going to go and set our video
codec which we went in already installed
so we've got ffdshow here so we've
picked that we're going to consider it
it's going to pop up with this very
complex list of things we could play
with which we won't
so the only three things were going to
touch here is you want to get encoder
and whole bunch of them there
you could take some time to play around
I've already tested out a bunch
I think mpeg-4 I using divx is the four
CC seems to work pretty well i'm setting
my bitrate - 5000 kbps that keeps a
pretty good quality doesn't look really
compressed but keeps the file size small
so that's important when you're going to
be uploading these to youtube
don't be waiting around to on so go
ahead and say ok now you could mess
around here
um I've tried this basically your frame
capture rate when it's going to code key
frame things like that
I believe it at default until you have a
reason to play with this socially that
there if you're recording audio which
probably want to do on by default it's
going to say don't record you want to go
and change it record audio from
microphones course you're going to do
that you'll need a microphone of some
sort either a headphone microphone
set or just standalone microphone what
are you doing if you have a laptop has a
camera and microphone to do it all there
um let's see
don't think there's anything else you
need to do there you could go in and
change your options for the microphone
change the bit rate and what not
we're not going to do that the other
thing to consider is region
so you may not want to capture your
whole screen actually I suggest you
don't most people are probably running
screens larger than 720p and again the
larger screen to try to capture the
slower this is all going to go so i
would suggest going ahead and saying
fixed region and fix it to your top left
corner up here and I'd set it to one
pixel and one pixel left and top that
way you know right where it's going to
be and in advance sort of you know
whatever recording if you're recording
studio max or whatever some 3d app or
what are you doing pre fit to this size
so it's not be maximized to be minimized
at least then you know you're capturing
whole screen there's some other options
where you can have the capture box slide
around following your cursor you can do
that if you think that works too
of course we consider with 1280 hi -
7:20
ok as you can see here
that's what we're recording and we're
going pretty good frame rate and that's
pretty much everything you do there and
then you just hit record it stopped when
you're done
it's going to pop up say where you want
to save that file you go ahead and save
it's gonna be an avi I do that as many
times as you want
throw them up and you're going to edit
them so let's pretend that i had just
done that and back over to youtube i'm
gonna go ahead and sign in and let's see
what we don't want to go here yet
let's go to hear we're gonna go to
upload sign in
to bring you to your channel you're
going to click upload and you have this
little box here
so what you want to do open up windows
explorer or whatever you've got
and we're gonna grab this little Spartan
clip I've got through that in there that
it's going to go ahead and upload and
while it's doing that you can go ahead
and name your files clips and some tags
so people can find them cetera
your category is be gaming in this case
set private because that video is not
ready
so once it's done uploading is going to
be a little message is done uploading
great let's just start processing it and
this is basically where YouTube is
really coding you're already encoded in
compressed video yet again
so again another reason to stay with a a
pretty lossless setting when you record
your videos you compress them too much
they're gonna just get compressed again
so i can only get worse
um you also get your little sharing
links those will also be there when it's
done
so we won't wait around for processing
that usually takes a couple minutes
k 1
you've uploaded that final you're going
to go ahead and go to my videos which
will bring you lists or like this
love your videos there so you'll see our
clip are starting to appear is now
uploaded this is one of a bunch of clips
I'm putting together for a quick
tutorial on how to do contributions for
player contributions for Team Fortress 2
this is my hat was just accepted a few
weeks ago the defiance Parton
so you TF two players out there can go
ahead and buy five or six of those for
you and your family and let's go ahead
and edit
we're going to go back here to our list
so when you're in here
look at all your videos one of the
options is video editor to go
click that it's going to basically show
us all of our available videos which
would be pretty much everything uploaded
so there's our Spartan plus some other
stuff
so you've got videos music you can't add
any audio files here this is a
precompiled list of music stuff that
YouTube decided to put in there and give
you a warning to throw one of those in
you're going to get a little sad when
your video plays but you know I think
you get ads anyway so I'm sure that
makes a big difference and then
transitions is the other panel here and
as you can see there's some really
advanced transitions you could use
I prefer the the crossfade but you might
want to go with the jack-o-lantern so
let's go ahead and start editing so
we've got our clip in this case I'm just
going to play with one clip and show you
how you can edit up say you did sort of
a running tutorial and you've got some
mistakes
some things you want to get rid of you
want to shorten things up the pace a
little quicker you can do all that right
here as simple as it looks
so we've got our first spring clip here
I'm going through a transition at the
beginning a little cross fade
I actually think is already there and we
got three options we can do affects
rotate or trim
so we're going to trim that one and see
if we grab this little bar or that
little bar
you don't want you to play it as we
slide it around
it's gonna just show us you know the
location in the clip where we're at so i
think in here somewhere i had rendered
and I don't want to be around for that
thing to render not a couple seconds
anyway so we're going to cut that out so
we're that render starts and drag this
guy over with trimming the tails at the
end of the clip keeping the head where
it was
you can go ahead and hit save and far to
play that now you would just get that
short clip there so i'm going to do is
bring another version of the Spartan
clip in and now we're gonna decide where
our heads should start for the second
clip
so again I can see even by the little
thumbnail guys that's where is to our
rendering so let's skip when that's done
and get rid of it
so right about there and then let's see
there i think there's something else
going to get rid of like open up my UV
panel
I really want to see that my movies are
actually very good
so let's hide that
you want to see that ok that's good
right there save
so now i'll throw in our transitions
just drag them in between clips pretty
easy doesn't get easier and let's see
music ah ok let's go with Barbara and we
will slide that down here into our
little music slot know what you can do
here
if you had audio in your clip already
you would slide this onto the right is
more of your original audio to the left
is more of the music
if you go all the way one way or the
other you're going to get one or the
other not both
so I would recommend if you want to hear
both be about a quarter from the right
if you're in the middle it's pretty much
mostly music so ok let's go ahead and
play that and so we got
that's nice
a little
piano music okay well that he calls for
some effects here and it's a see what we
can do
yeah black and white oh ok so work so so
go ahead and we're gonna pretend to do
little special effects here and pretend
this is an oldie time game modeling
tutorial like they used to do back in
the thirties
so let's play that now so we get
perfect
great
that's good ok so let's publish that we
can go ahead and hit publish its going
to treat it like a new video you create
a description title tags again
category later you can pick a video
thumbnail once you've processed it and
keep this private because I don't really
want to see that except for you folks
and let's say virtue so once it's all
published and encoded re-encoded pop up
in your list you go ahead and click it
so let's see what we got
yeah
and there's there's the ads that are
talking about a pretty good not bad for
for free
less than cheap
so thanks for watching hopefully a few
folks found this useful and can make a
few video casts made some tutorials so i
can learn something
alright thanks
