Yahoo Site Solution - Website Hosting and Builder

If you type in "small business website" or something similar into a search engine, Yahoo's small business website services will usually come up as the 1st or 2nd result. I purchased their Advanced service to see for myself if it is a good product. Read my blog post and watch the video for the results

about 50,000 people every month search
google for some key word related to
small business website and i searched
small business website in google just
now and you can see right now the small
business . yahoo.com is the number one
listing so they're guaranteed getting a
lot of traffic every single day to this
website and i want to test out the
services that they offer because no
doubt a lot of people are signing up for
every day and before you do or if you're
considering it you can take a look at
this video and see if it's right for you
and get my opinion
so I signed up for the advanced package
which you'll see here on the next page
it's listed at 5 99 per month but that's
if you sign up for five years in advance
so it actually ends up being closer and
I think 7 99 per month is what I'm pain
so watch out for these prices that
they're showing they may look different
to you depending on when you're looking
at it but they're typically priced
different per month or if you pay for
years in advance so as a customer of
yahoo small business when i log in this
is what i see you can see it's not real
exciting to look at it's similar to most
of Yahoo's products very plain-looking
but everything is here that you need
i'm going to go ahead and click on the
web hosting control panel where you can
manage your website but you can see they
have a domain control panel and an email
control panel where you can set up your
email addresses and manage your domain
names
so this is the web hosting control panel
you can see I already completed the step
of setting up my email which is pretty
easy to do
now i'm in the second step that says
design your site so i'm going to go
ahead and click on that and now i'm in
the yahoo sites solution website builder
that's their name for it's called site
solution and that's the online program
that most people are going to use if
they're yahoo customers are going to use
this program to build their website so
i'm going to show you how that works
they do offer you other ways to build
your website for example you could use
wordpress or you can even upload your
own HTML files or what other website
files to your yahoo hosting account
however that's probably not the best
value if you're going to do it that
route you're probably better off to just
get a hosting account through another
company like hostgator it would be a lot
cheaper and a lot more flexible so most
people who sign up for yahoo small
business website hosting are going to be
using this site solution website builder
to build their website and it really
won't take too long to go through this
because they don't really give you a
whole lot of options and features to
build your website the first thing
you'll probably do is click on the
change design button that allow you to
pick from a number of templates that
they provide you can browse through
these different designs and you can
actually click on each one and click on
it again and it will change your site to
that design so you can get an idea of
what the different designs look like
you'll see they're all templates they're
pretty basic
I mean most people are not going to be
super impressed with your website if you
use one of these templates but you can
see it's real easy to choose different
designs and it switches right away so
there's no design work that you need to
do you just simply change the
information all the text and add
pictures
so there's a few other options up here
i'll click on the site pages button and
that is where you can add pages to your
website you see I have four pages
home services about us and contact us
you can edit pages you can show or hide
them in the main navigation bar i'll
show you how to add a page by clicking
add page you can choose from a number of
preset templates for pages i'm going to
choose blank and i'll just say i'll call
it a new page click Add and it's going
to add a page you see there's a link now
new page right under the home menu now i
can edit this new page change layout
button allows you to change the layout
of a page
this template is giving me for different
layouts and you'll see the layout change
one of the drawbacks of using the yahoo
website builder is your really limited
to the layout that they provide for
example if I wanted to delete this text
box
there's really no way to delete it
except for selecting all the texts and
pressing delete to remove the text so
the box is still going to be there but
it's empty so it won't be displayed
if you wanted to add a picture into that
box you would click on the box click on
the image button in the upper left hand
corner and you can browse your computer
for an image so i add an image from my
computer i'll click Add and it will put
the image in that box you can type texts
in the box also so you're really limited
to using these boxes in the layout that
they provide there's not much
flexibility in terms of formatting they
do provide you some basic text
formatting as you can see in the toolbar
bold italics underline you can change
text color and alignment and add
lists and that's really about it some
your standard you know text formatting
in the toolbar you can also add links to
your text and images
so in this case i could click on this
image click the link button and i could
say i want to link to another website
and type in my website here - link to my
website
so that's an easy link tool that you can
use beyond that they have in add widget
button that just gives you a few items
you can add HTML code a flicker badge
google adsense block in google gadgets
and widgetbox so that's really all the
other options they give you
so that's really all there is to
creating your website with the yahoo
sites solution website builder you would
simply click on the different pages and
edit each page and when you're all done
you can preview it or you can click Save
and then publish to actually publish
your site to the web
I actually have my site link to a domain
name example website builder
so here you can see my website live on
the web
here's the new page with the image that
i added and it has a link to my website
and you'll see actually the text blocks
are not showing because i did not put
any texts in them
I didn't realize it but you have to edit
each one of these text blocks for them
to appear live on your website so i can
go in this box delete all this text and
type example text and we'll see if that
shows up so i'll click publish
then I'll go and refresh that page and
that you see the example text is showing
there so i can click around the site and
see the different pages
all of them are blank because i haven't
edited the text on those pages and then
there's a contact page it has a contact
form that can send you an e-mail when
people fill out the form
so overall this website builder is very
easy to use you can create a website
very quick with it but it will be a
simple website
it's not going to look very professional
because you're limited to using their
templates and then your overall
flexibility is limited because you need
to use their layouts
so for the price i would say yahoo
website hosting using their site
solution website builder is really not a
great value compared to other website
builders you can get for the same price
range you know in the five to ten dollar
a month range so hopefully that helps
and gives you an idea of how the yahoo
website builder works what it looks like
and whether or not it's a good value
