ErP measures and Energy Efficiency Labels for consumer appliances

The Ecodesign Directive for energy-related products (ErP Directive) establishes a framework under which manufacturers of energy-using and energy related products (such as windows or water using products like taps) are obliged to reduce the energy consumption and other negative environmental impacts occurring throughout the product life cycle. The directive is the primary mandatory means of reducing the energy use of products in the EU. This is complemented for some products by the Energy Label, whereby products at the point of sale (shop or internet) have to display a label which shows the energy efficiency categorical rating (A to G) and related information.
Consumer appliances have been amongst the earliest regulated products in the EU. At this point most of the energy-using equipment in the home have been included under one or more regulation, having a significant effect on energy use in the home. The course will cover most of these: washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers, ovens, cooker hoods, refrigerators and freezers, vacuum cleaners, televisions and simple set top boxes.
The course will:
• Introduce the key points of the ErP and the Energy Labelling Directives
• Outline the current regulations for each product group and the history of previous regulations
• Identify some learning points from the experience to date
• Present evidence of changes in the market for some products
Attendees of the course will gain an understanding of the eco-design and energy label regulations for consumer appliances.
