Tutorial - How to Convert Bluray to Digital Copy

Tutorial - How to Convert Bluray to Digital Copy

This tutorial explains how to convert Bluray movies to Digital Copy while still retaining its full high definition image quality. Making it compatible to play on an iPad, TV and computer.

You can also make it compatible with iPods, iPhone and iTouch as well
(Standard Definition Only).

Then you can back it up by burning it onto a regular DVD. This tutorial also shows you how to include subtitles that translate foreign dialogue in your movie. Also when converting videos in this format for uploading to youtube (like this tutorial and all of my other videos) you will notice that the buffering (video loading) is faster than a lot of other videos on youtube.

(I am using Windows 7 Ultimate in this tutorial)

Programs that I use in this tutorial. (Listed below)

hello everyone this is another tutorial
brought to you by quality is number one
today we are going to show you how to
convert blu-ray to digital copy
so you can play your favorite movies on
your iPad television or computer and it
will be able to fit onto a regular DVD
while still retaining its full
high-definition image quality in order
to do this we will need two programs
the first program we will be needing his
hand brake which is a freeware software
that you can download from handbrake fr
we will be using this software to
compress our blu-ray movie
the version of handbrake that i will be
using in this tutorial is the 095
version
the reason why i'm using this version
instead of the newest 096 version is
because it has features that i always
use which are not available in the new
version to download the same version i
am using go to the download page and at
the bottom under old versions
click on sourceforge page to download
the 095 version the second program we
will be needing his anydvd HD which you
can download from slysoft com
this software allows us to remove all
copyright protection and save the movie
to our hard drive the other programs i
will be using which are optional or
QuickTime 7 pro ac/dc and paint for
cropping the video i also use blue
corner to identify the video settings
and lastly narrow eight to burn the
movie to disk
once it has been compressed so once you
have downloaded the two programs
go ahead and put the blu-ray disc into
your drives then right click on the
anydvd icon which is located on your
taskbar and click on rip video DVD too
hard disk
next click on the source directory to
choose the drive that your disk is it to
choose where you would like to save the
blu-ray movie go to the destination
directory and click on the folder icon
from there you can click on the folder
to save it to that specific location on
your hard drive or you can also save it
in an empty folder that you can rename
by clicking
the make new folder button once you have
created the new folder you can rename it
by right-clicking on it and going to
rename i'm going to change the name of
my new folder to blu-ray
once you have chosen a location that you
would like to save it
press ok now to copy the movie to your
hard drive
click on copy disk the process will take
approximately 30 minutes or more to
finish once it is complete it will say
that it is done at this point you can
then go ahead and either closed or exit
the window
next we will open up handbrake and go to
source folder and then open the movie
you saved to your hard drive using any
DVD be sure that you select the folder
which has the bdmv folder in it or else
handbrake will not be able to open it
once you have selected the folder that
has the movie in it
press ok at this point you will see on
the top left hand corner under source
that it says processing title and then
however many out of the total amount of
titles it has to open this process
should take approximately five minutes
or so depending on how many titles it
has to open these titles are all the
video clips that are on the disk such as
the menus trailers
deleted scenes and of course the movie
obviously the movie is the lungs clip
out of all the titles so be sure that
you have selected the longest title from
drop down menu under title for some
movies
there can be several titles with the
same length when this happens the most
common differences between them is that
one title could have just the directors
commentary available for the audio while
the other title could be showing the
movie in another language on the actual
video for example it could be for the
opening title on posters signs and
newspapers that are shown throughout the
entire film
when you come across this problem the
best way to find the original title that
contains the original audio is to check
the audio when you click on each of the
titles with the longest duration to see
which title has the most audio languages
to choose from
once you have found which one has the
most audio tracks the best quality audio
track is usually the very first one on
the top of the audio list
another common situation that you may
face when choosing a title with similar
durations is that one title may be
slightly longer than the other
this usually means that there are
several different versions of the film
available usually the shorter version is
the theatrical version which is the
version that has shown in the theaters
and the longer title could be either the
extended or unrated version to find out
which version is which
all you have to do is to insert the
movie disc into your blu-ray drive and
choose the version you want in the main
menu want to get into the film
check the duration of the film on the
timeline which can be either on the
bottom or the top of the screen
depending on what player you are using
once you have found the duration of the
version you like all you have to do is
find the title with the same duration in
hand brake once you have done this you
can then choose the location you would
like to save the compressed movie by
clicking on the Browse button which is
located under destination once you have
named file and chosen the place where
you would like it then press safe
then hundreds of presets select ipod
legacy which should be on the very
bottom for output settings make sure
that under container the mp4 file option
is selected and at the ipod 5g support
is checked
next go to tools options and then under
output files
choose a default path by clicking on the
Browse button once you have chosen a
destination on your hard drive
press ok this location is where your
sample and final output files will be
saved by default
then at the bottom of the options window
check always use ipod / itunes friendly
file extension . m4v for mp4 and then
press close next set anamorphic to
strict change the cropping to custom and
set all four boxes 20 before we proceed
to the next step in hand brake
we need to find out two very important
settings that are movie has to do this
i'm going to use blue cloner once you
have opened the program click on the top
folder to open the movie on your hard
drive
once you have selected the folder which
contains the movie on your hard drive
press open then click on the bottom
folder to specify a location to where it
will be saved then press safe
next press the large play button and a
window will come up
tell you all the different settings the
movie haps the two settings
we are looking for are the video rate
and the video format
first we will look at the video format
it should say either 1080p or 1080i
if this number ends with an i this means
that the video is interlaced which means
that the video will have lines running
through it when you watch it on your
computer
however if you watch it on your
television
you won't see them the reason behind
this is because televisions are
interlaced and computers are progressive
Progressive means the video shows one
full image on each frame whereas
interlaced is showing to half images
blended together called a field
this is why you see the lines that run
horizontally throughout the entire
picture to fix this
all you have to do is go to the video
filters tab in hand brake and under the
d interlace tool click on the drop-down
list to the right of it and click on
slower
this will remove the lines out of the
video by making each frame a full image
instead of two half images blended
together
now if your video is 1080p then you
don't need to be interlace it because
each frame will be displaying a full
image already so there won't be any
lines in the picture
just so you know interlaced video is
half the image quality of progressive
now continue to the next tab called
video in hand brake and make sure that
the video codec is set to H dot 264 then
change the frame rate to match the video
rate that was shown in blue cloner next
check the to pass encoding option
this feature greatly improves the image
quality but takes twice as long since it
has to encode the video twice instead of
once if you want to upload your video
onto youtube is best not to use the to
pass encoding feature i have learned
from experience that it will cause the
video to break up on and off throughout
the entire video
then select target size this will allow
you to compress the movie - sighs you
want if you want to fit it onto a
regular for gigabyte DVD choose a value
3900 if you want to compress it to fit
onto and thank you goodbye DVD then set
it to 7900 then check the large file
size box located under the output
settings if the large file size box is
not checked when you are saving your
video to a size larger than exactly four
gigabytes than the video won't work
so be sure that this setting is turned
on when saving your video to a file size
larger than four gigabytes to get the
best image quality based on the duration
of the video
I like to compress a video to three
thousand nine hundred megabytes
if it is under two hours but if the
duration is longer than two hours then
it should be compressed to seven
thousand nine hundred megabytes also the
shortest video length you can compress
to four gigabytes is approximately 30
minutes just something i thought i
should mention when making a video that
is larger than four gigabytes the video
file will work on a computer but you may
lose compatibility with your television
and portable devices now if you're
wanting the best quality for a full
high-definition clip that is quite short
like a trailer or
music video then i would go to the
average bit rate option and type into
the box 10,000 please note
do not type any letters spaces or commas
in either the target size or average bit
rate boxes only numbers if you want the
best quality to save it on your ipod
type into the average bitrate 2500 then
go back to the picture tab and change
the anamorphic option to none
then type into the width 640 when you do
this the height number will change as
well because this is changing the size
of the image
however the numbers you see usually are
not correct
so to make sure click on either the up
or down
spinner arrows to turn up or down the
image size until it is large as possible
while still within the size limit that
is compatible with an ipod for video to
work on iPod it cannot exceed a width of
640 pixels and a height of 480 pixels
also if you want to make a video to
upload to youtube and have it to be full
1080p high-definition the with must be
at least 1920 pixels or the height must
be at least 1080 pixels
if they are not then YouTube will
downsize the video to the next lower
resolution of 720 p which is a width of
1280 pixels by 720 pixels
next continue to the Audio tab under
source select the audio track that you
want your video to have if you want your
video to have more than one
audio track press the Add track button
however i do not recommend you do this
as it might create compatibility issues
with some television players and
computer software players
another problem which could happen is
that you may also not be able to switch
to a different audio track making it so
that you are stuck with whichever track
your player chose once you have chosen
your audio track then make sure that
your audio codec is set to AAC mixdown
is set to stereo sample rate is set to
48 + bitrate is set to a hundred and
sixty the box that shows the settings
and audio track that your video will
have is the one which contains the line
which is highlighted in blue
now continue to the chapters tab here
you can choose whether or not your video
has chapters for skipping through your
video like blue rays and dvds have this
feature should not create any
compatibility issues but the only
program that I know which supports this
feature is QuickTime 7
if you want you can also rename each
chapter by selecting a chapter using the
left mouse button under chapter name and
then left clicking on it again once you
have done this you should be able to
rename the chapter
now under source located beside the
duration of your video you can if you
wish
choose to trim your video by chapters
seconds or frames
this can come in handy for situations
like if you have selected a video that
contains several episodes and you want
to separate them instead of having them
all in one video file for this situation
it would be best to trim the video by
using chapters
now the way trimming works is that the
end of one chapter is the beginning of
the next chapter to find out how many
chapters are in each episode play the
disc and skip using the chapters to find
out
let's say the first episode is nine
chapters long
all you have to do is make the first box
1 and the second box 9 so it would say
chapters one through nine
once you have done this you will notice
that the duration
just to the right of the last chapter
drop-down list will change to be less
than the original title duration
this indicates that it is being trimmed
to that length now that we are almost
complete
we will next make a short sample clip to
ensure we are satisfied with the final
product
to do this click on the preview icon
this will open along but short window
the first drop-down list has a start
preview option
this allows you to choose an area in the
movie you would like to export a short
preview from since it goes up to 10
this means that if you were to choose
five you would get a sample from
the middle of the movie the next
drop-down list is for choosing how many
seconds
you want the sample clip to be then to
save the sample clip click on either the
plate with QT or playing with VLC
buttons
once it is finished saving the clip it
should automatically pop up within and
bright for instant do it if it doesn't
open
don't worry this just means that
handbrake doesn't recognize any of the
software players you have on your
computer if you have quicktime the play
with QT button should work
next go to the location you say the clip
on your hard drive you can find the
sample clip by going to the folder you
specified earlier when you enter tools
options
default path the clip should have the
same name that is shown on the main menu
under destination file with the word
sample written afterwards
so go ahead and open up the folder that
has the sample file in it and then
opened up and quit time
now as you can see there are black bars
on the video which are on both the top
and bottom of the frame when you save a
movie that has this
it is always best to remove them this
will help you achieve the best quality
possible-- to do this we will need to
find out how many pixels are needed to
be removed off the top and bottom of the
video
to do this we will need to save a single
frame from the sample clip so that we
can have a closer look
but before saving a frame scrub through
the video clip to find the brightest
frame
this will help the images edges to be
more visible to make it easier to find
how much we will need to crop off the
video once you have found a frame you
like
go to file export then under export
settings select moving to picture and
then click on options for the
compression type select photo.jpg then
for the best depth choose best then
click ok then press save
now open up the file and we just saved
to the desktop by right clicking on it
and telling it to open it with ac/dc and
as you can see here on the bottom it
says that the resolution of the image is
1920 x 1080 which is full HD
after saving a frame from a sample clip
it is always best to double check and
make sure that it says it is full
1920 x 1080 if it isn't then it is a
possibility that it was automatically
cropped in hand brake
if this is the case just go back to
handbrake and make sure that the
cropping values are all set to 0
ok so then go to file and press save as
and save it to a bitmap and then press
save an accident and this is the file we
just saved which is the bitmap and then
open it with paint and okay so then
first of all we're going to need the
magnifying glass so go ahead and zoom in
and well with some videos on there can
be a bleeding edge on on the on the edge
of the video and if you don't want that
you can crop that off as well i'm going
to go ahead and do that but you don't
have to
so first of all we're going to be using
this line tool and we're going to choose
a bright color that we can easily see in
this case the cheese and bread and we're
going to choose how thick the the line
is going to be because we want to
accurately count the pixels and see
exactly where it's going to be how much
we're going to be dropping off
we're going to use the thinnest line
which is exactly one pixel in with ok so
i'm not sure if you can see or not but
we got approximately four pixels of the
edge that which is bleeding
so i'm going to count that in to be
cropped off and i'm going to zoom out a
little bit and scroll all the way up to
the very top
it's very important that were all the
way up so we don't miss calculate and
then go back to the line tool and we're
going to calculate from that point to
the very top
now i'm not going to go all the way to
the very top because it can go out of
the screen in which case as you can see
in the bottom left hand corner the
numbers are changing for how many pixels
are it's because it's telling me how
many pixels there are from that point
too
at the end . there so i always go 1
pixel less and that will mean a lot to
do is add one more pixel to this number
here and then I know exactly how many
pixels are going to needing to be
dropped off that will make it a hundred
and thirty two pixels so go to the text
tool here and then just drag and then
type in hundred and forty-two and just a
good habit to get into is always double
check just to be sure
so everyone plus the 1 pixel yes that is
correct 242 pixels
okay then we're going to do the exact
same thing on the bottom of the screen
and so we can clearly see if you want to
remove any of the bleeding edge this
case here it seems that we have four
pixels that are doing
the very bottom
select the line tool
click and drag from that point leave one
pixel
and we have a hundred and forty three
plus the one that makes a hundred and
forty four pixels for the bottom of the
frame then we're gonna just check the
sides of the video
this case we're doing the left side
and it appears that we have
approximately four pixels that are
leading will cut that off to fight for
pixels on that side
on this side
of another four pixels
k so what we have is a hundred forty two
pixels that will need to be cropped off
the top and hundred and forty four
pixels off the bottom then four pixels
off both sides of the video when
calculating the amount you will need to
crop off any side of your video you must
make the amount and even number if you
use an odd number
the video can have technical issues and
may cause the video to be non-functional
so we're going to punch in those values
into hand drink so hundred and forty-two
forty-four four and four and then just
to double check to make sure that we're
going to be happy with this
we're going to save another sample clip
but as you can see here in the
background i have the sample clip opened
since we're going to be overriding it
get the best of Exodus so that we don't
cause any problems
so then once you've set the sample clip
to go
and you've checked it out you're happy
with all the settings
all i have to do to save the entire
movie your hard drive is press add to
queue and
added to the list and you can compress
in code and i'll save it to your hard
drive on
if you're making several different
versions of the same movie clip be sure
that the name of the film that you're
saving is not the same
so you can just change the number
afterwards so that too doesn't overwrite
the same
version that you just encoded and so it
just as a precaution so you don't you're
making several versions make sure that
the name is not exactly the same will
overwrite it also if you want to have it
shut down automatically once you have
finished encoding it just said it change
this to shut down and it will shut down
automatically once it's finished coding
but if you don't want to you can just
turn it off by setting it to do nothing
ok so now our sample clip should have
finished being saved
so open up that next
and as you can see there are no longer
any black person either the top or
bottom of the video and now we're going
to check the audio make sure that it's
all good job has come a lot
yeah I got it
yeah
report of the panel ok so
so that looks good although i've
actually already see the entire movie so
i'm going to show you that next
so here we are here is the entire film
completed chapter selections as you can
see here on the bottom right hand corner
never seen
yeah
yeah
pain no gain
yeah
yeah
yeah
we are
your money
focus
as you could see there were some parts
in this chapter that had no subtitles
for translating the Chinese dialogue so
i will show you how to do that next
ok so the program we're going to be
using to hardsub our video is called
ribot 264 and you can download that from
video helped calm / tools / ribot 264
and to download it just go to this link
right here and says direct link click on
that and then save it to your hard drive
now it's been compressed in a format
that you will need to extract it with
either two programs i know that can do
this is when r ER or winzip which I will
supply the links for in description and
here we are right here
so when r ER or winzip these are the
legs for them and then once you've
actually installed
Rick bought 264 it will tell you that
you will need to install these four
programs in order for it to work and
these are the links as well these will
also be supplied in the video
description below so the extracting
software i have is when r AR
I don't have winzip so it's been a long
time since I've used that program but
i'll show you how to do it with
when r ER so all you have to do is if it
doesn't have the NRA our icon like to do
is right click on it and tell it to open
it with when r AR and it will come up
and say whether or not you want to
always open it with this program
if the program is not listed in this
window you have to do is click on browse
and find the program manually by going
through this through the folders or you
can search for it and it will come up
and then once you've chosen the
application then
it will add it to this list and then you
can choose it by selecting it and you
can choose whether or not it will always
open these types of files with this
program that you have selected by
checking this box and then by pressing
ok you can dissociate that program with
these type of files but I've already
done that so it's already associates it
so then to extract it all you have to do
is right click on it and drag to a
location you want to save it and then to
choose to extract it into a folder
choose this option here
and here is the folder right here just
finished extracting just move it up over
here
there it is it's all extracted and I
have to do to get into the program is
click on the application
click on add
coaches the folder where you saved the
movie and then click on the bdmv folder
stream the movies always the largest
file if it isn't shown to be the very
first icon you can tell the computer to
make it the first icon by right-clicking
within the window but without clicking
on any of the icons and then go to sort
by size and then it should make the very
first one
the movie if you're not sure
all you have to do is open it up and
play it but i already know for sure this
is the film
so once you've found it just press open
and then just let it process it
and then here you can choose the various
different settings that you want this
just means that this is the main title
for the film
this is the duration so you can if
you're looking for a particular version
and there's several different versions
you can tell just by the duration and
then you can choose whether or not you
want chapters or not
I think it would be best to leave it
with that chapter so I'm going to leave
that on and then
well 30 there's only one choice for that
it's the four method the videos in I
always leave this on wave because that's
it's a uncompressed format and gives you
a good quality results so i always
choose that audio
this is the language that you would
prefer DTS is the best quality you can
get the next best is a c3 and then
well of course you can see that the
different languages are are clearly
marked on each one
so this would be the best choice and
then for subtitles
it's best to just tell it all subtitles
and then you can choose because their
various different types
you can't see them all actually on this
list so which I will show you shortly
ok so then now we are all happy with all
the settings will just press ok and
we'll process again
this process will take a little while ok
so once it's finished
when you do with next is you go to
properties and then you click manual and
as i showed you before how to crop
we can punch in manually these are the
values we had originally did with
handbrake
so with with these values right here or
you can use their cropping method which
is to show you a preview as you actually
crop it here by using the spinners
so as you see here it
these are the black bars on the of the
top that's being dropped off right now
so but i already know for a fact it's a
hundred and forty two pixels from off
the top and the bottom is a hundred and
forty-four as you can see it's updating
and well if you can't clearly see the
edge of the video you can press new
frame right here in the corner and
change the frame so you can see it more
clearly
ok so
44 and then for either side
this that's for the left and right side
of the frame and right here is where we
do the subtitles so click on build in
picture now we have several different
types of sub titles to choose from
there are the regular subtitles that
stay on for the entire film for all
dialogue
then there are the subtitles that turn
on only one there is dialogue that needs
to be translated this kind of subtitle
is usually labeled as forced on the end
of the subtitle file since this is what
we are looking for in this tutorial
this will be the subtitle we will use
once you have selected the subtitle you
want then press open and then press
preview script
and then you can skip ahead until it
comes to part where there is subtitles
or that there's any speaking that is not
english as you can see here that it's
working
something you should keep in mind you
decide not to crop it here I'll show you
if you'd shut it off and you go to
preview you'll see that the subtitles
may not always be on the actual video if
you crop it then that's a different
story which you'll see here in a second
okay well as you can see it's much
closer to the bottom of the video so if
it's more than one sentence it would
come down here and you would if you were
to prop the video afterwards you would
lose some of the dialogue for the
subtitles and we don't want that
so to prevent that all you have to do is
crop it so i recommend it
drop your video ok so then all we have
to do next is press ok and I've tried
compressing the movie fully within this
program and the image quality is not as
good as handbrake so I just export the
movie to the largest file size i
possibly can to get the best quality
possible-- and then compress it and
handbrake
so to do that just like to pass here
then just check this right here and go
to the very bottom and click on the 20
3830 and
it will be approximately twenty three
gigs and so then for the best audio
choose the one of the very bottom for
the best bit rage and it still retains
the 5.1 surround so and we don't want it
to be normalized it probably would be
normally on a hundred percent but it's
just best to turn that off and that way
we're not we're not changing the audio
in any way
ok and then well to save it to a
location you want to just press this
button here and specify location where
and when you're happy with where it's
going to be saved
just press save and press done and this
is the video that we just did make sure
it's checked and press start to start
encoding it and then once it's finished
saving it and I've already done that so
i will show you
so here's the video right here we right
click on it and go to properties you'll
see that it's 23.1 gigabyte so that's a
fairly large video and it can be opened
with quicktime to be viewed that
there's something you should know is
that quick time does not recognize the
chapter selection that the video has as
you can see here in the the bottom right
hand corner there is no chapter
selection but once we have opened it up
and handbrake you will see that it sees
the chapter selection within this file
that we exported from rip lot to 64 and
we can then export it and compress it
down to say four gigs or eight with the
chapter selections included
so here we are we will just go to to
open up
we'll have to go to video file and then
click on the file is open
and well since this is already been
cropped with there's no need to drop it
at all
so we can leave these things alone but
of course we want ipod legacy you want
this set to strict ipod 5g support is
checked
all these are off h.264 the frame rate
of the video in this case it's 23.976
frames per second to pass encoding your
choice but i prefer to pass encoding it
I find that the quality is better in the
colors are especially the target size
I always make it 100 megabytes less than
the actual targets I'm trying to get to
just give a little lenient because if
it's even over four gigs at all
it won't work it's larger than four gigs
just select the large file size option
right here
we want to this track to be BAC stereo
4816 and as you can see or hear the
chantress elections we have sure this is
checked so that you will have chapter
selections and then press add to queue
and then now it is pressing code and it
will save it -
locations inside here
ok I've already saved the version that
we are looking at here that I've heard
some with replied 2 64 so i'm going to
show you it now with it fully compressed
with handbrake made both the four gig
version
the eight gig because the eggs better
quality we're going to use that one that
up with quicktime then we're going to
skip straight to that chapter where they
were talking without the english
subtitles and you'll see that it's now
hardsubbed that was chapter 15 held out
ok ok
yeah
other
we all need that
chante
and do your mind focus
right ok so then once you have finished
encoding your video and you are fully
satisfied with it you can burn it with a
program such as 0
in this case well I use nero so i can
show you how to do it
what you do is you go to nero Express
and under data go to data DVD press add
go to the folder that you have saved it
-
yeah
i'm just going to show you something so
I'm going to be burning the four gig
version so it cannot exceed this this
line here when it starts turning yellow
that means you're going to be needing a
dual-layer discs or basically the eight
gig and if it turns red that means it's
too large you cannot fit on
it's larger than a cake so you can fit
on any DVD and sort of would have to go
to blu-ray if you wanted to exceed that
capacity so
we're just going to take that off that
ya see right here with little yellow
line is that's the limit so if you
exceed that then you're going to be
needing the larger dvd1 burn it
ok so then press next
you can name the disk you can't exceed
it was 15 letters but so anyways I want
you to let named it then you can choose
there are some other settings here but I
always just leave them as they are now
and I like to have it verify it after
it's finished burning it just to be sure
that the burn is completed successfully
and for the multi-session this feature
allows you to burn more content on it
later but you lose compatibility
like if you're going to watch it on your
television you will be able to so i
don't recommend using this multi-session
if you're going to be playing it on a
television
and here you can choose how many copies
you want to burn this case we're just
gonna burn one and
just press burn you're ready to go and
then once it's finished burning noon
you're good to go that's how you do it
thank you for watching
