In this video we're going to review the Rokinon 12mm full-frame fisheye lens. We're going to compare it to the Nikon 16mm f/2.8 fisheye as well as the Rokinon 14mm non-fisheye.
You'll definitely want to click through to our site and read the full written review, with image samples and sharpness crops etc. however simply put, this lens is amazing. For anyone who finds themselves shooting in confined spaces, whether urbex photography, spelunking, (caving) or simple interior real-estate photography, having an extra few mm on the wide end is always a good thing.
This lens is significantly wider than the Nikon 16mm f/2.8 fisheye, and when de-fisheye'd in Photoshop using a plugin like Fisheye Hemi, it is jaw-droppingly wider than the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8.
Also, it is much sharper than the Nikon fisheye, (therefore making it as sharp as or sharper than all other full-frame fisheye lenses on the market!) ...and is marginally sharper than the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 even when de-fisheye'd.

yeah
hey there folks it's matthew civility
with us in the lounge . com and I am in
death valley in the middle of nowhere
and i'm reviewing a new fish eye lens
the rokinon 12 millimeter f 2.8 and i'm
comparing it against I've got the nikon
16-millimeter f 2.8 fish I here and i've
also got the broken on 14 millimeter
non-fish I ultra wide lens
although it's got such wobbly lines that
it might as well be a fisheye
so that's part of the reason why I took
such great interest in this rokinon 12
millimeter fisheye
it's a lot larger as you can see and a
little bit heavier than the nikon 16 2.8
and the nikon has autofocus and it's
only two hundred dollars more expensive
so I was kind of skeptical at first
because this lens is really really you
know cute and small and compact and fish
I shots are usually not that common so
you know you just take a tiny little
ends like this and toss it in your bag
but this thing I have to say is awesome
we've done a lot of testing so far and i
really like the fact that it's 12
millimeters instead of 16 millimeters
so even though it's still a hundred and
eighty degree diagonal I think it gives
you a wider angle of view somehow and
it's less distorted around the edges
that's a new word i just made up the
story anyways all streets i'll show you
some samples and you'll see it's pretty
awesome
overall I'm very impressed is extremely
sharp both wide open and stopped down
and it really it blows away all the
other fish eyes that I've ever tested so
I'm definitely going to be buying this
so let's check out some footage and some
hundred percent crop zoom sharpness and
all that good stuff
thanks for checking in
yeah
all right well I probably should have
used to go pro for some of those car
videos but i was having way too much fun
and actually you know what the GoPro
video camera itself despite looking like
a fisheye lens may not necessarily be
this wide angle of a few in fact I'm
pretty sure it isn't because i know i've
read the specs somewhere and it says it
has like a hundred 70-degree angle of
view and either way this
the bottom line is that this rokinon 12
millimeter is the widest fisheye lens
that I've ever used a non circular
fisheye and it's just amazing overall i
will get into some crops and zooming and
corner sharpness and all of that stuff
in the written review so be sure to
click through to our site for that but
here and now in this video what I really
mainly wanted to show you guys was well
you can see the goofy portraits that we
have fun with a fisheye lenses are
always fun for that kind of stuff but
what I really wanted to show you guys
was these images here
this is a sample of the this is the
rokinon 14 millimeter f 2.8 and it's
pretty wide
this is the rokinon 12 millimeter f 2.8
it is so much wider it's not even funny
to go from this to this and now if you
look at this fish I you can see that the
the vertical lines here at the edges are
not distorted
that's because I d fish I'd them and
let's look for the non corrected
versions of this this is what it looks
like with one
this is what it looks like completely on
corrected on the 12 millimeter fish I
and now this is what it looks like with
one pass of in Photoshop the fish I Hemi
d fish I program
it corrects vertical lines and makes it
a verte almost vertical lines perfectly
straight but it doesn't correct
horizontal wobbling as much so I packed
give it one more pass to make it almost
a perfectly straight line
ultra wide lens and what you want to
notice here is that at the very edges at
the at the center at Central edge here
and that the central edge here and here
you're not losing any angle of view all
you're doing is d fishing the very very
corners which you do you use lose quite
a bit from there to there but in a
single pass you actually don't you lose
much fish I at all so i just wanted to
mention that a little plug for the fish
I hemi application which i really like
the bottom line is that compared to the
14 millimeter which is a very very very
wide angle lens this fish eye lens just
it's just so much wider let's find the
worst the 16-millimeter fish islands
here's the nikon fish I and this is with
it
d fish-eyed so you can see this is the
14 millimeter
this is the 16-millimeter d fish eyed
and this is the 12 millimeter d fish I'd
that is wide
that is so so wide it's pretty it's just
crazy
here's another version this is 12
millimeters and this is with it d fish
I'd you can see if you're doing an
interior you you barely have to stand
into the corner you know how in some
lenses you have to cram yourself way
into the corner just to barely get an
angle of view
you know better than 90 degrees so you
can see edge to edge with this lens you
barely have to stand eat at you know
pretty easily comfortably in the corner
of a room and you can see very very
easily just how much angle you've got
here let's find the 16-millimeter shot
that's the 16-millimeter shot that's the
16-millimeter shot d fish I'd using the
lightroom profile for d fish i see how
it just loses a ton more
angle using Lightroom's d fish I program
it's just really really not good
here's the 16-millimeter deficient using
fish I Hemi
and here is the 12 millimeter d fish I'd
using photoshop and fish i had me so
you've got a significant wider angle of
view there as well
and then once again using the 14
millimeter non-fish I just seems like so
so less why that it's just funny to
think that this is such a wide angle
lens and yet it's still not even close
to being as wide as the 12 millimeter
that's only two millimeters folks it's
just incredible
anyways let's filter the blue images and
just look at a couple more photos here
this is a what it looks like with out
the years with and without the
correction you can see just how little
information at the corners you're losing
when UD fish I the lens like that and
let's scroll down here here's some
here's some more
ultra wide angle shots of to our
adventures through the desert
we went and explored and open mine shaft
do not try this at home folks it is a
highly unrec amended not recommended
anything rumor was that this used to be
a dynamite box but there was nothing in
it when we looked so yeah one of the
most awesome things about you about fish
is one of the most useful things for a
fisheye is enclosed tight quarters and
there's nothing more like that than a
mine shaft
let me tell you if you like to do urbex
photography urban exploration
photography or spelunking or anything
like that where you're in confined
quarters your underground
never fisheye lens is a must have
and this lens really really does an
amazing job at delivering just the
widest possible view of speaking of
urbex photography here's a abandoned
pool with some ice at the very bottom of
it
this is the warm springs area of Death
Valley and last but not least one more
thing that fisheye lenses are really
good at is just perspective exaggeration
you know I could have taken this photo
with my 24 whatever zoom
you know walk around zoom lens if i
wanted to just by backing up a little
bit but I wouldn't get that incredible
bulbous distortion with the Sun in the
corner here
you know it's just a prospective
exaggeration is really really fun with a
fisheye lens
especially if you're out in the
mountains and you don't have a perfectly
straight horizon to worry about and you
know the curvature looks awesome
you can find a lot of practical uses for
the fisheye lens
one of which is the clothes macro
photography and i have a bad pun that I
thought of for you guys
the have a 12 millimeter rokinon is very
very sharp
even at point-blank range haha
you can see well this is at f/16 but
take my word for it or check the written
review that even wide open this lens is
extremely sharp
even at close distances and it's just a
delight to shoot with I had a blast
using it and i'm definitely going to be
buying one I may even sell my broken on
14 millimeter non-fish I in order to
help pay for this lens
alright folks thank you so much for
tuning in and be sure to check out the
written review for a lot more sample
images and we'll see you in our next
video take care
