Question: Can You Defragment the Registry if Your PC has an SSD?

In one of your reviews you told about SSD, that you should never run a defragmentation. But can or may you run a defragmentation of the Windows registry on an SSD, So that your registry get smaller and your PC will boot faster.

I defragmentation above the Windows
registry on a SSD
so that you registries get smaller and

question that comes up
and it comes up because a Symantec's
right
you know we start talking about things
in the technology world
a one-word um starts to get used for a
whole bunch of different things but it
means different things for all those
different things that is talking about
so you're talking about defragmenting
your hard drive
it's it's different then we're talking
about defragmentation
your your registry so let's talk about
defragmenting your hard drive for men to
explain why you don't want to defragment
a solid state drives so basically what
happens in the old platter base drives
a so you had your old hard drives and
basically the platters with spent
now when the platters would spend what
would happen is the computer would
decide
where to put put data on to you the
the the the spinning platter and so in
order to write data would have to go to
that point in that order to
in order to read data who have to find
where that data was stored
on that platter a delivery date for all
from that place
so whenever you go to open a file other
something called seek
time and seek time was a time it took
for the hard drive to be applied where
that data was stored it be a star star

dealing with these all platter based
hard drives
are essentially what would happen is
that the hard drive
would just just right in one order so
basically would see would start at the
beginning and they just keep writing
writing writing writing writing writing
writing writing writing
right and that makes a lot of sense
except for the fact
that if you then went through when you
started deleting file see to start
bleeding movies are you start deleting
music radio that kinda stuff
%uh he did not automatically rewrite to
those locations
it will go basically all the way to the
and and you have all these big gaps so
what would happen
is think about it if your your data was
was spread over a line
you have data here and there be a gap in
the data here that a gap in the data
here then there's a gap right
so what would happen with the
fragmentation with cloud-based hard
rises all you're doing
is basically copying and pasting all
that data into one location so it's all
in one location
that means it's a lower seek time
because if you're trying to find
multiple files
all those files are now physically
stored much closer together
are so it's faster to grab this file so
that that is what we're talking about
your time defragmenting hard drives
is basically clumping all of that data
into one location the hard drive
so that the seat time is lower an
important thing to understand what every
time a platter base drives
is basically more or less
um the the the cloud-based drives do not
degrade
oMG what happens as with most platter
base drives are you keep writing or
using them
until about some point some physical
component fails and then the entire
drive just
fails and dies right and so if you want
to do something like defragmenting
are you can defragment and that drive
every single day and it's not going to
matter cuz you can copy you can paste
you can delete
and it doesn't degrade the quality of
the drive you can just keep doing that
doing that doing that doing that until
at some point the motor on the drive
fails
solid state drives are different because
they don't use plotters iraqis motors
they don't use any that kinda stuff
basically
uses some as what's gone on by all tile
memory
%uh this memory structure are it stores
the data
into this memory structure but the thing
to understand is is how
SSD's function that the actually do
degrade over time
the more review to write cycles are on
that solid state drive
the more thats all state drive will fail
so it it actually can be used up its
very interestingly start looking at
modern data storage
I is the idea that solid state drives
should be looked at as consumable
items whereas with gold platter dries
you basically use until he died
if they may die in five years I may die
in 25 years but basically
you throw them into the server you make
sure your backup is running properly
and then you just keep those those
platter based drives in your server
until it is die one day right a solid
state drives on the other hand since
they degrade with every
read/write cycle if you know how many
read/write cycles happen within a day
you can plot out how long until that
drive will be basically completely dead
will be consumed
whether it's a year two years or five
years or ten years two things when
you're dealing with solid state drives
you want to minimize
the read/write cycles you want to
minimize how many times the cells
with at that that memory get written
into or race because every time that
happens
are it decreases the life expectancy
above that sell within the memory
and then your your drive will fail
quicker so that is why you do not do
defragmenting ok salts a drug hard drive
defragmenting a solid state drives the
other reason you don't do
a hard drive defragmenting assaults it
drives is because its solid-state
memory so it doesn't have that arms
swinging back and forth seeking things
and sewed even if you do defragment
that's also drive it actually doesn't do
anything for performances
it functionally works in a different way

the one location because you do not have
a

the data it's all spread out in

do not need to defragment solid state
drives does not increase the performance

about the registry so
defragmenting the register so we started
by defragmenting the registry basically
what this means is
I'll what happens with the registry the
registry is the with the the database on
Windows computers
stores just a stupid amount of
configuration information everything
from a proxy server use
about whether or not the task a task
manager
should be enabled or disabled like all I
kissed thousands and thousands and
thousands of settings are
are in the registry so every time you
install a piece of software every time
you uninstall a piece of software that
modifies registry
the problem is everytime you install a
piece of software it ads values to
registry
but when you uninstall piece of work
doesn't necessarily
a erase those values to the registry and
so what happens is
you start to get lots and lots and lots
love extraneous information within a
registry
so that when your computer goes to seek
something the registry because basically
is a normal database
%uh it is did he just get so big that it
slows down your computer because the
computer has to search through
all of these keys that are no longer
relevant
you know you install Photoshop five
years ago with anyone
uninstalled three years ago but those
values are still sitting in the registry
all this kinda stuff still sit in the
registry
tweet about the fragment in the registry
what we're talking about
is software goes through basically looks
at all those registry key items
and sees oppose registry Stuckey's are
still being used for anything at all
if they are still being used their cap
if they're not being used it goes and it
deletes
those registry keys cuz they're not
being used for anything they're just
taking up space
and so by doing that that shrinks the
registry when your computer
Windows PC needs to do something and it
really hits the registry is now dealing
with a smaller database file
which means your computer will run
faster so the question then is
well we don't defragment solid state
drives
water park in a we've installed the
operating system
onto a solid state drive are are we able
to defragment the registry
an answer is yes and the reason is
because registry file is that
well not really actually that big but
its its review really really smart
I read sir how big a registry file is
like a mad like the entire
registry file little early is like a mag
so when you defragment
the registry file more or less
all you're doing is editing like a
normal file on your computer a text file
picture file
anything like that so again
theoretically I suppose it degrades or
salsa drive
but it doesn't it doesn't do it anymore
than Eddie
any other file the computer basically
you're reading
writing that one particular file um so
that does take a tiny bit a life
expectancy of results a dry but it's
like
it's like that much less expects it to
you in saint so you do not
defragment your hard drive south side
rice cuz it doesn't do anything
literally won't do anything for you
anyway it's a tirely different PC
technology

does it will consume
those read/write cycles that your cell
se drive fast so you do not defragment

I look at what for a while it's a great
cya couple mags it's smaller than a
music file
like literally you do more damage
