Beginner PCB Layout Tutorial - Diptrace (DIY Guitar Pedals)

Beginner PCB Layout Tutorial (DIY Guitar Pedals)
Using the free version of Diptrace
Closed Caption:

everyone just going to do a sort of
crash course in deep trace and I'm know
about this
it's a complex program and are just use
it to make a few basic sort of a lie at
guitar pedals so it's going to be very
basic
so the intro into the using the program
hopefully by the end of it you be
confident enough to get around and maybe
make a basic sort of layout and that's
my objective here as i said i'm not a
pro at hopefully when do too much
tumbling but i'll show you what i know
so far
so to start off with basically you need
to add components obviously and i'm
finding the right compiler can be half
the half the trouble and I'm actually
found what works pretty well for a
number of components and i'm just going
to show you the numbers that I've used
for those so that you can find them in
your list the list of competitors along
the top here you can see this is a
different types and there'll be one for
resistors
the capacitors etc so find the
appropriate component in the appropriate
category
pretty much so this one here c5 is a cap
and you can see the code there
I'm not going to write it out just just
pause the video here maybe increase the
resolution of the video so you can see
that number if it's a bit blurry
that's what I use for most cats when you
get up to probably about one microfarad
you might need to use a bigger captain
this but for the one for most of the
ones under under that the standard size
caps it works quite well for resistors i
use this one and down again i'm talking
about quarter what resistors and . of
what resistors for germanium transistors
I've been using and the t o5 and that's
the that's the package time and when I
sort of diodes
I've been using do 30 fall
I pin I say this is for a charge pump
i've been using Mac's that i've been
using just a bite and it's also deep
12-16 among sighs - if you're using
bigger cats
that's a bigger i sees and for the
electrode cap
I've been using this one so and and i
found most fit sometimes the legs are a
bit close but that they fit all the sign
they look fine turn it around and
talking sort of half a mil so that's
basically the components that i've been
using offer for pit for potentially I'm
gonna I've actually just use
I still can't find the right
potentiometer in the in the components
least I've just been using three pads
next to a channel like that
that's a potentiometer there and that's
a potentiometer there tho straight and
that works fine and then you just gotta
I usually wire into the pace of it
anyway so it doesn't make much
difference
so you can also find if there's a
specific component that you're looking
for
sometimes you can find a package talk on
some of the electronic stores and so for
instance if you just want a standard
small signal MTN to the two and five
Oh double late you'll see that the
package it it's written there
- yo 92 so if you go into the transistor
section in dipped race
you should be on find that and that will
be the right one for that particular
component so if you do get stuck on
something specific you can look and in
some of the catalogs you you'll find
what package I are you might be able to
find a package type the correct package
type in the in the list
probably that's the way that I found a
couple of components that I've been
looking for
so I just started something really
simple just put down two pads and change
the track size and the might change the
pad sighs I'll show i'll show you how to
do that in a moment
and so just got to the top of you with
the green black button place pad put one
down with that another right click to
get out of the place had done it all
and then go up to this button up here
which is the map that rap manual button
and click on that and then just left
click on the first pad and route it
however you want
if you want to read it around something
crazy since you can go up like this and
then left click again
you know and all sorts of fancy shapes
left click again and you can read it as
complicated as you like and to increase
this one of these from the pad to the
corner here this is called a segment but
this whole track is called a Nik
so if you want to change the whole track
with size
right click and go next with and then go
custom and then change that to whatever
you want so I'm just going to go 10 3
inches and it will change the whole the
whole the whole track but if I just want
to change that
like that one segment from the pad to
the corner can right click on it and go
segment with and then custom and then
change that to say six
just so we can see that what's going to
happen and you said that increases in
size but the rest of the track doesn't
increase
you can also add a default size so if
you get if you want to change your going
to be changing a lot of things 2.03 you
can change it and i'll just try to
remember where this is
ok so i found it it's under always have
trouble fun and some of them
it's on the route and then trace
templates and then you just add whatever
you want so for instance you just put
test point zero fall and then go ahead
and we'll come up the top here and then
when you right-click on the tracks if
you want if you got a whole bunch to
change just a bit quicker up rightfully
can go next you'll see it's got test the
one that i just added to select that a
bit quicker that way so you can add that
what with when you happy when you find
what with you happy with just add that
into on need to that and in to trace
templates and done you can get a quicker
way of selecting it didn't have to
manually enter it every time you want to
change the track and trace
all right segment so I've been ported a
bunch of of components from the PCB
layout that i showed you before and
you'll notice that this is one
no just putting in from the library and
the pads are actually a lot smaller than
the pads on the components that are
imported
I've increased the size of these pets
because i just find it means you to
solder onto this is a personal
preference of mine but i'll show you how
to change the pads in case something
comes up where you actually want to
change your pad
so this is probably gonna be the most
complicated example because it's got a
lot of pads on it but basically you can
either change the pads one at a time or
you can change them all in one go for
the eye sees i find that all the all the
pads will change that are not the
rectangular pink in one in one shot and
then you can just change that one on a
time
so when it's when it's highlighted red
right click on it and go ad properties
and i'll just change that one ping 16 at
the top here on its own just to show you
how to do that you've got to uncheck
this use patterns pad properties because
that refers to the default settings and
then in the settings go down to the
width then change it to will just
increase in a bit too . and go OK and
you'll notice that just the one pad will
change you can change and a quick way to
change all of these overall painting one
shot is to go do it again highlighted
highlight any of the Oval any of these
15 mins add properties and select that
this time and click on the patterns pad
properties button and change it in here
and that will all change together except
for the rectangular one will stay beside
it hasn't changed but again if you want
to change one pink
just do what I do before right
highlights our thread right click pad
properties make sure that that's
unchecked because that's the default
settings and then just going and change
it like that and you can even change it
from rectangular to round if you are to
olive oil if you on if you want to have
them all look the same so that will
bring that up too . so that's pretty
much what i've done with all these
components just to just to increase the
pad size of it because i find a fault
code size is a bit small so if you want
to rotate compiler to select it press
spacebar and it will spin it around and
just a note on another note on the on
the tracks and net is basically a group
of tracks so you'll notice that when I
highlight one track it actually the all
the all those tracks go blue
that means that they're all on the same
net and you can see what entities if
you're right click on it it'll it'll set
the top next one
so if i read another track say from here
to here and I highlighted you'll notice
that that's not that doesn't go blow
that track doesn't go blue because it's
not part of this net
it's not physically connected to this
net so if i want to change a cut the
color of an it for instance if that it's
not the most protected this was the
power rail the nine volt power out
I can right click on it and go
knit color and then custom and then
change it to red and you'll see that
this all changes to read but this one
doesn't find it's quite handy when
you're on when you when you're putting
the components down for a pedal and you
can see it it makes it easier to keep
track of things
so another common task is to add a cop
or i'll just quickly show you how to do
that before i do though
I'm will incorporate the ground track of
the cop for it's a it's a nice page to
do i'm also to show you how to do that
and I'll just pretend that the ground
track goes from here to here to here to
here and if you right click on that
track you'll see that that is now next
to just take note of what knit the
ground track is because if you have
tracks flying all over the place um you
want to make sure you select the right
track when you are when you put the cart
before they're so the copper poor button
is this blue button up here little
tracks on it and i'll just quickly added
will be very rough but we're not
concerned with make this here is just an
example like that and then press Enter
when you're done and i'll come up with a
cop or settings and then you can select
what pattern you want to have the cop
cop or how much clearance you want and
I'm actually going to increase that 35
think 25 a little bit fine and then the
connectivity button his way you'll set
the ground track so so neat to is going
to be on the ground anyway so the copper
Paul is going to be is going to be all
ground so select next to a hit OK and
you'll see that that particular net has
disappeared it's underneath the copper
Paul you can see you can sort of see
it's still there if you want to reverse
that so you can actually see what's
going on again select the cop or right
click and go state and then do one port
so you can actually see what's going on
again and then if you want to return it
to the white ones you can either just go
back to state and the port or you can
select it and on the right hand side you
see that button says update and
we'll just start feeling back in for you
again so just one other thing with the
car . definitely add too many points you
want to get rid of once it is
accidentally put an extra one down the
bottom here
just um just hover over it and select it
then just right click and go too late .
i don't get rid of the extra point and
you can also change the component like
if you want to change up to say 12
selected on the left hand side you can
see all the details it can change change
that this
sorry no you have actually this is
something pretty stupid i reckon with
depression the double click on that and
it brings up the young the enter into
the component number in there
you can change that so you wanted a
little update to see one and also for
your own reference you can put in a
value so for instance got 10 nano farad
that's just what you can actually
directly talking to this one for some
reason that you can't talk about it
the one above that you can just putting
one of you want it can be you know it's
a it's a box flat so 100 down 10 karat
for instance
so I'm just trying to get a few other
things that i can show you just to get
to to get you started with dipped rice
another thing too is the sum these
tracks sometimes when you start moving
stuff around a lot and they get really
complicated and they just end up with so
many segments and then you end up with
this sort of this massive the exact sort
of pattern and to get rid of any of
these segments that you don't want just
right click on it and go to Lake node
and it will remove it
so do that a few times just to make this
this trace look a bit more basic
so yeah anyway something like that and
so it can be you can simplify to be like
that
so that's most of the basic stuff want
to show you and i'll just show you a few
things on how to actually finish the
board now you can add dimension
this to the board if you want which is
this button at the top of your place to
mention just click on that and you've
got horizontal and vertical which
probably the main ones that you use so
the horizontal just go across like that
left click and then left click again and
then you can move it up and down like
that and then left click again and all
put in place and you can actually you
can edit that later anyway if you want
you can change the size any of those
dimensions like that and obviously did
site for very cool quickly walking
you get the idea and also if you want to
just duplicate the board
I'm just going to get rid of those are
going to be in the way and I just really
feel that again you see the update
button on the right there to refill it
select everything left click and copy oh
really
I go ctrl-c ctrl-v to copy it and then
grab it and move it out of up like that
little bit of a gap
I usually a bit of a gap between the two
because the axle is going to go through
the middle and you can add some lines
like a boy around around them by i am
selecting the shape of the top of your
rectangle is a few different shapes not
filled you don't want field
you just want to add the rectangular and
the outside so the unfilled rectangle
and then i'll just put it in a bit messy
but we're just whack it in for examples
sake
and then you want to line down the
middle to select the line and go like
that and if you hold shift
it'll keep it - and it looks like
probably 15 degree angles or 45 maybe
so yeah if you want to strip if you want
to do keep it straight like that
just hold down shift and then if you
select the square and go up to the right
hand side here it is tight and did great
at the moment that one actually come in
on when you etch the PCB to go to type
and change that to signal
this is this is just how i've been doing
it there might be a better way to do it
but this is just how I get around this
and then for the do it for the line as
well
signal and you'll notice that it changes
the same color as the tracks is some
this cream sort of call
so you've got you two boards here and
you just want to make sure that it's
actually on the shape properly because
I'm this is this is basically you're a
for shape and you just pick him up and
and move them to the center of it
I meet you start moving off to the side
sometimes you can turn that off the
shape and if you can't see that shape
just got to view and go display shape
and yeah we'll put the shaking and i'll
just show you one more thing before we
move on to printing as well if you want
to add some labels like in hour plus 9
volts ground except era and you can just
do that with there's a text the text
button
ok so I just done got a bit lost its own
next to the shape button the shapes and
lines buttons and you see ABC
just click on that select what you want
to type and then you just talk whatever
you want so you know plus 9 volts
obviously that's a pretty big label
there so if you double click on it
no sorry if you right click on it and go
. you can change the size they're so
like if it's smaller 28 you can actually
go small and that you just like the
button and even though the young drop
down box and it goes 28 you can actually
put six if you want to make it even
smaller and then you just position that
wherever you want
so back on to finishing the board's this
that you're very pretty much should be
where you're at now you've got your
board you put your ball around if you
want a border you can add the border
around and then you go file and then
preview and and when i click preview i
might actually lose the screen here from
from traps so i'll just start the video
again
ok so this is the this is the print
screen for the for the for the board now
and you'll notice that if you print it
now it's actually going to have a whole
bunch of i'll just move the sky lot
it's got all it's got everything on
there it's got c1rca and you don't want
all that stuff to come out on the
Prairie
I actually zoomed in there by eating
scale the top here
this is the preview scale not the pretty
girl pretty girls below don't change
that because you'll actually end up
printing off of massive so a massive PCB
which is obviously not what you want to
leave a hundred percent to get rid of
these this great stuff
the great writing and everything that
you don't want pretty much hit objects
over here and I pretty much just get rid
of everything up to a cop or you don't
get rid of cop or the otherwise you lose
a couple but you get rid of everything
up to there are two copper for and then
treat your I'm pretty design and on to
whatever you're putting on - I print on
the magazine paper and but what if you
want to print onto and just make sure I
can't show you because I'm at home I
don't have multiple IDs at work but if
you're putting on your license yet just
make sure that you choose
you don't choose economy to an economy
off you want the darkest most higher res
printed you can do so make sure the DP
is cranked up as well and if you
actually see how to print onto magazine
paper and do an etch pretty much at home
with just a bit of fun
you just need to get some ammonium
persulfate check out my other tutorial
video on had an itch a piece of bait a
really easy way to do it the chemicals
are mild and you can do it at home all
you need is an iron and ammonium
persulfate pretty much yes to check out
my other video on that if you want to
see how to actually etch the board
so that's pretty much it it's um it's a
bit of a
it's not a very intuitive program of
tries to get around but hopefully with
love to show you the added you be able
to get around and do some do some basic
sort of PCB layout sand and get started
with it and it's pretty I find pretty
rewarding doing your own pc from scratch
it some to be a fun
thanks for watching and don't forget to
