Converting Text to Numeric Data in Excel

This video demonstrates how to convert textual numeric values in Excel to numerical data.

a little and welcome to this video
training tutorial on how to convert
textual numeric data from the excel
download file to a usable numeric format
so let's begin by selecting a subset of
the property list were in the selected
city listing right now and as you can
see we have a Kiki as the selected city
and we're going to click on Excel
downloads we click on that and we were
going to go ahead and open that file and
when it comes up and says that the
violence in a different format and
specified by the file extension you want
to open it to say yes
okay so there we go as you see we have
to
numerica columns here one is taxes and
the others assessed value and if you
look up here in the cell definition
you'll see that the numeric data is
surrounded with double quotes and if we
tried it to run some against this column
or do any kind of a mathematical
operation it's not going to work because
Excel thinks that some that it's text
data so what we're going to do is to
convert that data and here's the process
for doing that i would just go down to
the bottom of the spreadsheet and then
get down a little bit further
there we go and what we're going to do
is to just append a row so we're going
gun insert insert a she grow and we'll
just copy this data here actually going
to cut it from that from that row and
put it up here so that we've got all we
got left is a blackberry with the bottom
and get rid of that ok so now we have a
blank row the bottom we're going to go
to any one of those cells and I just
picking where the tax column is going to
put the number one in there and press
enter now if we click into that cell and
then look up here where it shows the
data you'll see that it's a numeric one
as opposed to quotes around it so that's
great so we're going to copy that right
mouse click and say copy that cell and
then we're going to go and select all
the cells in that row for the taxes and
then we're going to come up here and
click on paste and paste special and
then we want to make sure that we click
on the x button because really what
we're going to do here is to have it
multiply the taxes by one and that's
going to convert the data and then we
click on ok and as you can see y la all
the tax data is now right justified
which indicates its numeric and if we
click in there we see kind of an odd
formula but this works in terms of
making the data on the American nature
so that you can do numeric alphabetic
I'm sorry of mathematical calculations
against it
