Behind Enemy Lines was a 3d gallery shooter, and it used polygonal 3d graphics, like that of 3dfx. The graphics chip was used by the Sega Saturn which was the home console version. I believe during the late 1990s, the difference between the arcade versions and the home console version was narrowing. There wasn't much of a difference between the arcade and home console versions. When we reached the 32 bit cpu era, home users could play arcade quality games at home.
If you ever had the Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation, Sony Playstation 2, Nintendo 64, and the Sega Dreamcast, the graphics were spectacular. The animations were also very smooth for those games as well. I remember playing Virtua fighter on the Sega Saturn, and it was like playing the arcade version at home. As a result of these technological changes, the arcades began to decline around the late 1990s, and in the early 2000s.
We also had other technological changes in telecommunications, like broadband internet which enabled players to play games on the World Wide Web. Online games were becoming very popular at the time, and there was no need to go to the arcade anymore. Back in the 1990s, we had 56k dial up modems. 56k modem could do about 7 kilobytes/sec. Early cable modems and DSL modem could do about 0.256 to .500 megabits/sec. That translates 32.8 to 64 kilobytes/sec. This was about 4.7 times to 9.14 times faster than the fastest dialup. Not only that cable and dsl modems got even faster in 2004 to 2008, we had speeds of 1.5 to 2 megabits/sec. That translates to 192 kb to 256 kbs/sec. In the present, we can download about 3000 kbs to 5000 kbs/sec. As a result, most of the gaming we do is online, and we can reach players from all over the world.
The graphics for this game was pretty good even by today's standards; after all, it was a 32 bit system. Now, we use 64 bit systems in 2016. By looking at older games like this, you get an idea of how much technology progressed in 18 years. You should play this game and see how games were back in the late 1990s.
