Apple have finally confirmed the Apple iPhone 3G, it will be available on July 11th 2008, and will be exclusive to o2 - through o2 Direct and the Carphone Warehouse. There aren't many changes to the iPhone - the main ones being that it is 3G capable, and it will also come with built in GPS.

Once again the Apple iPhone 3G will be available in two models - 8GB and 16GB. The 8GB will be available in both black and white, while the 16GB will only be available in black.

The other main differences are the 3G iPhone has contact search which allows for easy searching by typing in the start of a contacts name, iWork document support for PowerPoint, bulk deleting, moving and saving images from emails and a better battery life (300 hours standby and 10 hours talk time). Sadly Apple have kept the camera resolution at a dismal 2 megapixel, which is unfortunate as this is the area that the other so-called iPhone killers are concentrating on with many having 5 megapixel cameras now - such as the Samsung i900 Omnia and Nokia N95.

The Apple iPhone 3G will also be available on PAYG, although the price of this is yet to be announced. And existing iPhone customers will be able to upgrade to the 3G version (with the same costs) by signing up to a further 18 month contract.

More interesting are the new tariffs and prices, the Apple iPhone 3G will be subsidised by o2 and will actually be available for free on certain tariffs:

£30 per month - 75 minutes & 125 texts - 8GB cost £99, 16GB cost £159 £35 per month - 600 minutes & 500 texts - 8GB cost £99, 16GB cost £159 £45 per month - 1200 minutes & 500 texts - 8GB Free, 16GB cost £59 £75 per month - 3000 minutes & 500 texts - 8GB and 16GB Free

All tariffs are on 18 month contracts and come with unlimited data and Wi-Fi.

So as you can see Apple have seen the error of their ways and have finally subsidised the cost of the phone - this should attract more people to the iPhone as people ore often more willing to pay a higher line rental in exchange for a free phone and no upfront cost.

So if your main gripes with the original iPhone model were the lack of 3G and the expensive cost - then here, it seems, is the answer! So try to be ahead of the queue come Friday July 11th 2008.
