Everyone that surfs the internet regularly has had problems with pop-ups from time to time. They're annoying and bothersome, opening new windows right and left when visiting a website that pushes them to your computer. If you try to close one, 5 more seem to magically appear where before there was none. Worse yet, pornographic ads can come up as your children innocently play on their favorite webpage. Pop-ups are a form of advertising that many companies use to grab your attention and redirect you to their site to make a sale or allow you to sign up for a service. Sometimes they can be very annoying to close even if they offer an icon or close box. A lot of times, clicking anywhere within the advertisement can lead to more trouble with pop-ups. They can lead to more pop-ups, and possibly harm your computer in the process. There are "innocent" pop-ups with the sole intention of getting you to a website to sell a product.
However, what you need to be aware of is that there are also a malicious variety. These install adware onto your computer without your knowledge or consent. These are also directed toward advertising, but they can be almost impossible to remove. Other types of malware can be installed that actually spy on you while you're using the internet. The aim of some of these is to push more targeted ads to you via pop-ups. Some, however, can be used to obtain sensitive information such as credit cards numbers, bank accounts, and passwords. Clicking anywhere within the pop-up, even the 'x' or 'close' box, can install adware and other malware to your system instead of actually closing the pop-up. Be very careful. To close them safely, use ctrl-W.
Buying a pop-up blocker can be a very effective way to stop both the annoyance the danger. There are free versions out there on the internet, but it is advised to go with a trusted paid service. They will have more updated software to ensure your continued safety. Some browsers can play a role in helping secure your computer as well. Since Internet Explorer is the most widely used web browser today, it's prone to more risks. A better browser used for every day use would be Firefox for many reasons, and you can download a free pop-up blocker directly from their site. It's a great browser period, but will not protect you unless you are surfing the net while using it. Paid software can help get rid of the pop-ups that come up just when you're connected to the internet. Paid adware software is also advisable.
